Aerosmith to Return with Movie Song

Aerosmith are set to return with a movie soundtrack song. Ultimate Classic Rock reports that the song “Legendary Child” will appear on the soundtrack for the forthcoming sequel, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, which will be released on June 29.

“Legendary Child'” was an outtake from the band’s 1991 Get a Grip sessions, but Aerosmith have now re-recorded it for the movie, and it’s also looking likely to appear on the band’s forthcoming new album due in Fall 2012.

Aerosmith’s Joe Perry recently told Canada’s QMI Agency that the forthcoming album “definitely has a feel like some of the early stuff. People are always asking for something that sounds like the old stuff. We’ve tried to bring that back.”

Joe Satriani Releases 3D Movie <em>Satchurated</em>

Guitar shredder Joe Satriani is releasing a 3D concert movie to theaters. Satchurated was filmed live on “The Wormhole Tour” in support of Satriani’s most recent studio album Black Swans and Wormhole Wizards, at the Metropolis in Montreal on December 12, 2010.

The movie Satchurated will be the first 3D theatrical concert movie release with 7.1 Dolby Surround Sound. The movie is directed by award-winning filmmakers Francois and Pierre Lamoureux, who have directed and/or produced concert films and music documentaries for Rush, The Who, Slipknot, Deep Purple and others.

 A CD release is also due in March.

Bachman & Turner Featured in Upcoming Will Ferrell Movie

Canadian rock legends Bachman and Turner have landed roles in a new movie starring Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis. The classic rockers will appear and perform in Dog Fight, a film being directed by Jay Roach (Austin Powers), according to Winnipeg Free Press.

In the film, Ferrell and Galifianakis play North Carolina congressional candidates battling for the same seat. Guitarist Randy Bachman and bassist Fred Turner show up to play their hit “Takin’ Care of Business” at the winner’s celebration rally.

“It was really hard work, long days and about 200 people on set,” the band’s manager Gilles Paquin said. “But it’s one of the biggest movies of the year and it’s great positioning for the band.”

The movie also stars John Lithgow, Dan Aykroyd and Dylan McDermott, and is due to be released later in 2012.

Mötley Crüe Movie in the Works?

While Motley Crue singer Vince Neil is chatting with the media about possibly leaving the celebrated ’80s rockers, bass player Nikki Sixx is going the opposite direction and saying the band are just getting started!

“This is the beginning of what will be the biggest probably four to five years of the band’s career,” he told Rolling Stone. “We’re negotiating with a couple of other extremely huge bands on doing a co-headline tour, something that’s never happened before. There’s new music in the future.”

Sixx says that’s not all. A full-fledged Motley Crue movie is in the works. “The other thing to look at is the wheels are in motion for getting the Motley Crue movie made now,” he said. “We finally got everything in order the way it needs to be done, and that’s gonna happen.”

The movie, Sixx explained, would be shaped around the band’s memoir, The Dirt. “We have sort of an agreement with a production company, directors, etc., to right now just keep it amongst ourselves,” Sixx said. “So once we have everything really together, we’re gonna let everybody know. But trust me, when I say the wheels are in motion they’re definitely in motion.”

Even with all the starry-eyed plans for a movie and upcoming Las Vegas residency, Sixx said that at some point, the guys will hang up their heavy metal hats: “The band sat down and had a powwow as brothers and friends and guys who’ve been doing this for over 30 years, and we said, ‘When is it time?’ We’ve always said since we were kids, we didn’t want to hobble into the sunset. So after the movie, at some point – whether it’s within a year or a few years – we’re probably gonna have that conversation about maybe it’s time, maybe it’s time to go out on top.”

In other Crue news, Neil is one of the artists slated to contribute to an upcoming Ozzy Osbourne tribute album.

Foo Fighters Debut New Video, Play MTV Movie Awards

The music video for the new Foo Fighters single, “Walk,” is getting an extensive rollout. The video, which was inspired by the Michael Douglas film, Falling Down, debuted earlier this week on MTV, MTV.com and VH1.com.

This Sunday (June 5), the Foos will perform the song live during the 2011 MTV Movie Awards show. In addition, the documentary film, Back and Forth, which chronicles the group’s career, will be released on iTunes on Monday (June 7). One week later, a DVD version with 35 minutes of extra footage will be available through retail outlets, with a Blu-ray version being sold exclusively at Best Buy.

In the next few days, Foo Fighters are expected to announce a slew of new tour dates.

Liam Gallagher Wants Johnny Depp to Star in Beatles Movie

Former Oasis frontman and current Beady Eye singer Liam Gallagher is working on a film about The Beatles and he wants Johnny Depp to be part of it, according to AFP. Gallagher is producing the movie, which deals with the band’s Apple Corps and is based on Richard DiLello’s book, The Longest Cocktail Party.

“The film script is done,” the singer told Q magazine. “It’s gonna blow people’s minds, man. I’m just waiting to find out when we choose the actors. “I want Johnny Depp to play Derek Taylor. It’s got Johnny Depp written all over it, man.”

So what makes him think the Pirates of the Caribbean star would be a good fit for Taylor, The Beatles’ publicist?

“Derek Taylor was a dude. He’s up there with Lennon,” Gallagher said.

Of course, Depp and Gallagher go way back. The actor and rock star became friends in the mid-’90s and Johnny even played slide guitar on an Oasis track (“Fade In-Out”).

Foo Fighters to Perform at MTV Movie Awards

MTV has announced that Foo Fighters will perform at the 2011 MTV Movie Awards. According to the announcement on MTV.com, Dave Grohl and company will perform “Walk,” from their new album Wasting Light, at the June 5 ceremony.

The 2011 MTV Movie Awards will be broadcast live from the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, California. The program will be hosted by actor/comedian Jason Sudeikis. Presenters include Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Steve Carell, Emma Stone, Shia LaBeouf, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Josh Duhamel, Patrick Dempsey, Cameron Diaz, Jason Segel, Jesse Eisenberg, Aziz Ansari, Danny McBride, Nicki Minaj, Selena Gomez, Leighton Meester and Katie Cassidy.

Foo Fighters’ North American tour continues Monday at the Mid America Center in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Tony Iommi Talks Dio, Autobiography, Movie Pursuits

Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi is the latest rock star to get in on the autobiography fad.

Iommi was recently interviewed by Barbara Caserta of Italian web radio Linearock.it about his future endeavors, which include an autobiography called, Iron Man: My Life with Black Sabbath and Beyond, as well as supergroup WhoCares, which is a collaboration between Iommi and Deep Purple vocalist Ian Gillan.

Regarding the one-year anniversary of Ronnie James Dio’s death:

“I can’t believe how a year has gone by so quickly. Since Ronnie’s passing, there was a lot of grief and a lot of upset because we shared a lot of life together. Being in the same band together, we got very close, and we were very good friends. And when somebody goes that quick, it’s very much of a shock, and I can’t tell you how sad the whole thing’s been. … He was a true genius, really, and a true believer in what he did. And he would never let the fans down, and that’s a great thing about Ronnie… That’s one of the great things about Ronnie. So, yeah, he’ll be absolutely greatly missed.”

On his future plans:

“I’ve got a lot of things in the can, but I can’t talk about that at the moment. I am doing my autobiography now, which comes out at the end of this year. I’m also doing [music for] three movies. It’s gonna be three altogether, but I’m doing one first and then we’ll take on another one next year or whenever. But I’ve signed up with a producer for three films. So that’s something else that’s gonna keep me very busy. And I’ve also got another project that I’m writing at the moment. I’m doing a lot of writing.”

WhoCares will drop their debut single in North America on June 27 through Eagle Rock Entertainment and in Europe on May 24 via earMUSIC.

Metallica Get into the Movie Soundtrack Business

Metallica rarely allow the use of their songs in movies, but the metal band digs a new independent feature called Hesher so much, they’ve granted the filmmakers use of some of the band’s music.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who plays the lead role, recently explained he based much of his character’s performance on late Metallica bass player Cliff Burton, who died when Metallica’s tour bus crashed during a tour in Sweden in 1986. Gordon-Levitt was shocked when Metallica recognized the similarities without giving them prior warning.

“They dug the movie. It was a real honor and I took a lot of inspiration for this character from the basis of some of their early albums, this guy named Cliff Burton, who played on Master of Puppets and Ride the Lightning,” Gordon-Levitt said, reports Blabbermouth.net. “And when the band saw it, they were like, ‘You know what?! He reminds us of Cliff,’ and we didn’t even tell them that’s what we were going for. And they let us use their songs and I was actually moved because I grew up headbanging to Metallica.”

Movie co-star Rainn Wilson of The Office added to how Metallica’s music enhanced the film, calling Metallica, “The Beatles of heavy metal.”

Hesher, which hits theatres today, also stars Oscar-winner Natalie Portman. The movie is a comedy-drama about a troubled young man (Levitt) who proves destructive in the lives of a boy and his father after the death of the boy’s mother.

Linkin Park Single Included in New <em>Transformers</em> Movie

Linkin Park’s “Iridescent” will be featured in the upcoming summer movie, Transformers: Dark of the Moon. The single features a new version of the track that appears on the band’s most recent album, A Thousand Suns, and will play over the film’s ending credits, according to Blabbermouth.net.

A Linkin Park song has been featured in each one of the Transformers movies – “What I’ve Done” was included on the first one and “New Divide” appeared in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. Both songs hit #1 on the Billboard Modern Rock Radio chart.

“The first two songs were huge hits and I have no doubt that this new song will be equally as successful," director Michael Bay said. Composer Steve Jablonsky weighed in on why the band and the film series are a good match: “Michael and I respond to Linkin Park because they have a cinematic sensibility to their music that translates to the big screen.”

The band’s own Joe Hahn will direct the video for “Iridescent,” just like he did with “New Divide,” which included Transformers film clips.

“‘Iridescent’ has always been a fan favorite when we play the songs from A Thousand Suns live on stage, so we’re thrilled that Michael decided to feature it in his third Transformers movie,” said Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon hits theaters on July 1.

<em>Harry Potter</em> Producer Lands Beatles for Next Movie

David Heyman, the producer who brought the J.K. Rowling’s popular Harry Potter books to the silver screen, is looking to recapture that magic with the help of none other than The Beatles, according to Collider.com. Heyman’s next film is an animation project that will feature ten songs by the Fab Four. The film itself will center around a dung beetle trying to woo a ladybug. According to Heyman, landing The Beatles for his soundtrack was “not easy, but we’re really excited about it.”

The film wouldn’t be the group’s first appearance in an animated film. John, Paul, George and Ringo all starred as characters in the 1968 surprise hit, Yellow Submarine. The film was directed by Canadian filmmaker George Dunning, who had previously created the animated opening for the Pink Panther classic, A Shot in the Dark.

As for which Beatles classics will appear in the film, Heyman said, “It’s a bit early to say what the songs are, but I’m really, really excited.”

Tom Hanks to Produce Green Day’s <em>American Idiot</em> Movie

After months of rumors and speculation, Green Day’s 2004 album, American Idiot, has been given the go-ahead to be made into a big-screen, feature film.

Universal has officially signed Tom Hanks to produce the upcoming adaptation in partnership with Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool, said Reuters.

Green Day and their label had been in talks for a while about a proposed big-screen adaptation of the Grammy-winning album, following the success of the one-act, all-sung American Idiot Broadway musical, directed by Michael Mayer.

Mayer will also direct the movie, and the creative team is currently in negotiations with Oscar-winning screenwriter (Milk) Dustin Lance Black to write the screenplay.

Meanwhile, open-call auditions for Green Day’s American Idiot Broadway music tour are underway. Toronto’s auditions are already wrapped up, while Chicago’s auditions happen 11 a.m. Saturday, April 16 at Actors Equity Building (557 West Randolph Street) and Boston’s are slated for 11 a.m. April 30 at Berklee College of Music (1140 Boylston Street).
