John Fogerty Works with Foo Fighters, Miranda Lambert on New Album

Rock legend John Fogerty is prepping a new album on which he’ll perform some of his best-known Creedence Clearwater Revival songs with an array of special guests. According to Billboard, Wrote a Song for Everyone (due this fall) will include collaborations with Foo Fighters, My Morning Jacket, Bob Seger and country stars such as Miranda Lambert, Brad Paisley and Keith Urban.

No tracklist is available yet, although some of the album’s selections have been revealed: “Fortunate Son” will feature the Foos and “Who’ll Stop the Rain” will be a duet with Bob Seger.

Earlier this year, he spoke about his experience recording with Lambert, whom he called “a great voice and a great, soulful presence in music, and really a delightful person.”

Coldplay, Noel Gallagher and Foo Fighters Have U.K.’s Top Selling Rock Albums of 2011

Coldplay only released their fifth album Mylo Xyloto in October but managed to top the 2011 U.K. rock album sales chart by some distance.

NME.com reports that according to The Official Charts Company in the U.K., Coldplay had the biggest-selling rock album of last year with Mylo Xyloto, at over 900,000 copies sold.

Noel Gallagher’s debut solo album wasn’t too close to Coldplay’s record, but it did come in second with 500,000 units sold. Trailing Gallagher were Florence and the Machine, Foo Fighters and Mumford and Sons.

Foo Fighters Fans Cause ‘Volcanic Quake’?

A recent Foo Fighters concert in New Zealand helped bring about tremors similar to those of a volcanic quake, according to Rolling Stone. The movements of 50,000 excited fans were registered by two seismic stations.

Auckland GeoNet reported that the first quake happened during Tenacious D’s opening set, but the biggest tremor came when the Foos took the stage. “The cause of the shaking is most likely the weight of the 50,000 fans dancing, as 50,000 fans is equal to around 5,000 tonnes of mass moving (or moshing) on the ground for the duration of the concert,” the scientists wrote. “This set up a nice harmonic vibration in the ground which was recorded in our nearby borehole seismometers.”

In recent Foo Fighters news, Dave Grohl recently thanked fans for an “amazing 2011” and suggested that there might be a new Foos record happening next year.

Foo Fighters’ Taylor Hawkins Says Getting on Stage is ‘Do or Die’

Foo Fighters are continuing their world takeover with a headline slot at next week’s T in the Park festival in Kinross, Scotland. Drummer Taylor Hawkins, for one, can’t wait.

“It's been a while since we last did T in the Park — 2005,” he noted to the Daily Record. “And I think we did it in 2002, as well. The Scots are definitely some of the wildest crowds around, there's no question about that. The dudes are real dudes — it's great. And I love Scotland, it's beautiful."

For Hawkins, playing to wild festival crowds is what it’s all about:

"It's always scary, but always fun. Every time I get on stage, it's do or die — that's the way I am."

The blond basher also reminisced about being asked to join Dave Grohl’s outfit back in 1997.

"I knew I liked the music and I wanted to be a part of it. I was going from band to band and doing whatever I could, at that point, just to keep working. And one of my favorite bands in the world was Foo Fighters. When I joined, I didn't know how long it was going to last. I was just like, 'All right, I'll join Foo Fighters, maybe just for this record and that would be it.’”

Foo Fighters Debut New Video, Play MTV Movie Awards

The music video for the new Foo Fighters single, “Walk,” is getting an extensive rollout. The video, which was inspired by the Michael Douglas film, Falling Down, debuted earlier this week on MTV, MTV.com and VH1.com.

This Sunday (June 5), the Foos will perform the song live during the 2011 MTV Movie Awards show. In addition, the documentary film, Back and Forth, which chronicles the group’s career, will be released on iTunes on Monday (June 7). One week later, a DVD version with 35 minutes of extra footage will be available through retail outlets, with a Blu-ray version being sold exclusively at Best Buy.

In the next few days, Foo Fighters are expected to announce a slew of new tour dates.

Foo Fighters to Perform at MTV Movie Awards

MTV has announced that Foo Fighters will perform at the 2011 MTV Movie Awards. According to the announcement on MTV.com, Dave Grohl and company will perform “Walk,” from their new album Wasting Light, at the June 5 ceremony.

The 2011 MTV Movie Awards will be broadcast live from the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, California. The program will be hosted by actor/comedian Jason Sudeikis. Presenters include Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Steve Carell, Emma Stone, Shia LaBeouf, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Josh Duhamel, Patrick Dempsey, Cameron Diaz, Jason Segel, Jesse Eisenberg, Aziz Ansari, Danny McBride, Nicki Minaj, Selena Gomez, Leighton Meester and Katie Cassidy.

Foo Fighters’ North American tour continues Monday at the Mid America Center in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Foo Fighters Plan Fall Tour

To support their new #1 album, Wasting Light, Foo Fighters will be hitting the road in September for a run of U.S. dates. Dave Grohl and Co. have announced nine September concerts that will take them from St. Paul, Minnesota, to East Rutherford, New Jersey, according to FooFighters.com.

But it’s not like the Foos will be twiddling their thumbs until then. They begin another short American tour tonight in Tulsa, Oklahoma, head to Europe in June, play Lollapalooza in Chicago in August and then return to Europe after that.

According to Spin.com, fans should expect to hear a mix of Foo classics like “Everlong” and “Learn to Fly” alongside new songs from Wasting Light.

Foo Fighters Guitarist Says Size Matters

Foo Fighters will roll into Tulsa, Oklahoma next Tuesday to rock the 19,000-seat BOK Center, as a part of the band’s massive world tour. According to guitarist Chris Shiflett, though, it might not be the best venue for a rock show. 

"Rock 'n' roll should be done in clubs," Shiflett told TulsaWorld.com. "We've done lots of clubs and theaters in between all those huge shows. That's something we've always done. Lately we've just done a lot more of it.”

Nevertheless, the guitarist promised fans hoping to catch the Dave Grohl and company on the Wasting Light shows, "The bigger the venue, the bigger the bombast and spectacle. We're definitely louder on this arena tour.”

Shiflett takes pride in the fact that, when you strip away the pyro and the lights, there is still something of substance underneath.

"Foo Fighters are a basic rock 'n' roll band when you boil it down," Shiflett said.

Foo Fighters Guitarist Admits Resentment

Though their new album has just hit #1 on both sides of the Atlantic, the Foo Fighters aren’t completely in their comfort zone. Just a few weeks before Dave Grohl and company released the hit Wasting Light album, they unveiled Back and Forth, a documentary by Oscar-winning filmmaker James Moll that revealed several uncomfortable and painful pieces of the group’s past. Now, the band find themselves answering as many questions about former drummers as they do their latest single.

One of the metaphorical nerves that was exposed was guitarist Chris Shiflett’s resentment when original Foo guitarist Pat Smear rejoined the band in 2006.

"I was wary of Pat,” Shiflett told the New Zealand Herald. “I think anybody would have been. He almost came back after I'd been in the band a month. And I would have been out at that point; it wasn't like now. I didn't have my footing. So that was my frame of mind: here's this guy who wants my job and my job is how I feed my children and pay my rent. So my job's important to me for lots of reasons, musically and otherwise."

Foo Fighters hit the road next month on a world tour, with their first stop at the U.K.’s One Big Weekend festival on May 14.

Foo Fighters Set for First #1

Hot off a very public (and very rockin’) CD release party on Late Night with David Letterman, Foo Fighters are rocketing toward the top of the charts. Billboard is reporting that prognosticators anticipate over 200,000 copies of the group’s new album, Wasting Light, will be sold by week’s end, which would send the Foos to their first career #1 on the Billboard 200.

Dave Grohl and company have previously placed five albums in the Top Ten, with In Your Honor reaching #2 in 2005 and 2002’s One by One and 2007’s Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace both hitting #3.

Other albums bowing this week include Alison Krauss and Union Station’s Paper Airplane, Jessie J’s Who You Are and Paul Simon’s So Beautiful or So What.

Dave Grohl Getting Drunk Set Course for Foo Fighters’ Album

Foo Fighters’ Wasting Light is out today (April 12) and is getting rave reviews. The rock band’s seventh studio album has been praised as the group’s best-ever release on both sides of the Atlantic.

The New York Daily News says: “Like most Foo CDs, it charms from start to finish. It’s energetic, fun and unendingly catchy.” U.K. newspaper The Daily Telegraph calls it: “Far and away this band’s best album to date – tough but accessible, reliably catchy, yet also surprising at the last.”

Dave Grohl has talked-up Wasting Light’s garage-rock mentality, but maybe he talked himself into a hole he had to dive into?

Foos drummer Taylor Hawkins has told themusicnetwork.com, “Here’s what happened… Me and Dave were just doing some demos when he went to some heavy metal awards show. He got drunk and this reporter asked him, ‘What are you guys doing?’ So Dave says, ‘We’re getting ready to make a record and it’s not going to have any [expletive] on it, it’s gonna [expletive] rock and we’re doing it on [expletive!] tape with Butch Vig.’”

“Then he got up the next day and read it online. He was like, [expletive]! It’s almost like we had to do it.”

Dave Grohl: I Started Foo Fighters to $%&#! Get Away from the Past

Seventeen years after their formation in the aftermath of Kurt Cobain’s suicide and the subsequent breakup of Nirvana, Foo Fighters have never been bigger. With a new album, Wasting Light, set for release in the U.S. tomorrow (April 12), a new documentary recently released by Oscar-winning filmmaker James Moll, titled Back and Forth, and a world tour on the dockets for the summer, frontman Dave Grohl has been placed in the somewhat uncomfortable position of dredging up darker moments of the past on his current promotional junket.

“I remember reading an interview with [Washington, D.C. punk legend] Ian MacKaye, where he was talking about nostalgia and how unproductive it can be,” Grohl told the Washington Post. “When there’s so much left to do, why spend your time focusing on things you’ve already done, counting trophies or telling stories about the good old days? And that really affected me, because he’s right. It’s the reason we started Foo Fighters… We started it to [expletive] get away from the past. After Nirvana ended, it was the one thing healing us from the heartbreak of losing a friend and a band.”

Grohl says the band were grilled by the press after their very first rehearsal: “What the [expletive] would we have to talk about after one rehearsal other than the past?” he pondered. “We [didn’t] even have a silly tour anecdote yet.”

All of these disparate moments have come together in the new album, Wasting Light, which reunited Grohl with Nirvana producer Butch Vig and former bandmates Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear.

“I was basically writing about the experience of being surrounded by family and friends and Butch and consumed by memories,” Grohl said. “And doing it in my garage, there’s something full circle about that. After everything that we’ve been through, we’ve managed to take this band to a place that we never aspired to be.”
