Black Sabbath Still Set for 2012 Download Festival

Organizers of the U.K’s Download Festival have said Black Sabbath still plan to perform at the festival this year, despite guitarist Tony Iommi recently confirming he had been diagnosed with cancer.

Speculation about the metal legends’ Download slot followed news that Iommi’s illness meant the band wouldn’t be able to play at California fest Coachella as originally planned.

But Download boss Andy Copping has told the NME: “As far as I’m aware everything is fine. I’ve been told that Black Sabbath are going to be playing Download. I don’t want people to worry unduly about that, we should all just send our thoughts and best wishes to Tony Iommi.”

After Iommi’s diagnosis, Sabbath moved work on their new album from Los Angeles to the U.K. Sabbath previously announced plans for a world tour in 2012, but there is no official word on whether that will happen.

Clash Legend Joe Strummer Honored with Festival

Joe Strummer, the founding member of U.K. punk icons The Clash who passed away in 2002, will be honored with a festival this summer.

The festival will be organized by the Strummerville charity and will take place around August 12, the day Strummer would have turned 60.

The organization is calling the festival the Strummer of Love and the lineup will feature artists and bands influenced by The Clash.

A Strummerville spokesman told Mojo magazine, “None of the bands have been booked yet and the search is still continuing for a suitable site. But when we were discussing how to celebrate Joe’s life, a music festival seems to be the most appropriate way.”

Eminem Turns Down $6 Million Offer to Headline Festival

Eminem must not be hurting for money these days. After all, the Detroit-based hip-hop gent just turned down a $6 million gig.

That’s right – when Big Day Out promoter Ken West approached Eminem with a $6 million offer to headline the annual Australian music festival, which journeys around cities in both New Zealand and Australia, Slim Shady turned down the generous offer.

“It was la la land to think he could ever do the Big Day Out, even though we offered $6 million," promoter Ken West told the New Zealand Herald (via MTV News). Big Day Out has come up against quite a few snags trying to book acts. Over the years, they’ve had high-profile players such as Blink-182 and Prince ask to be considered for the festival, only to fall through.

“We got asked over a year ago by Prince's representation to say, ‘We really want to do the Big Day Out,’” West explained. “At the same time we had Blink-182 chasing us for a year, saying, this’ll get Travis [Barker] on a plane – neither happened. It just kept going to the end of the line, and nobody ever really said, ‘No.’”

Regardless of the setback, Big Day Out is on for 2012. The bands committed are impressive, including Soundgarden, Kanye West, Foster the People, My Chemical Romance, Cage the Elephant and more. Find the full list on the festival’s official website.

Johnny Cash’s Boyhood Home to be Restored, Festival Announced

Johnny Cash’s boyhood home will be saved for posterity. Arkansas State University has purchased the Dyess, Arkansas, home and announced plans to restore the house’s structure and create a museum. At a press conference Thursday, a spokesman for the university said that the plans would be paid for by proceeds generated by an annual Johnny Cash Music Festival.

The inaugural festival has been slated for August 4 at ASU’s convention center. All of the artists announced for the festival were either friends or relatives of the late country legend. The list of performers, which is still growing, includes Cash’s daughter Rosanne Cash, brother Tommy Cash, son John Carter Cash, and friends Rodney Crowell, George Jones, Gary Morris and Kris Kristofferson.

Cash, who died in 2003, moved with his family into the house in 1935, when he was three years old. He lived there until he graduated high school in 1950 and left to join the Air Force.
