Duff McKagan’s Last Ride with Kurt Cobain

Velvet Revolver, Loaded and former GN’R bass player Duff McKagan has been talking about the plane ride he took with Kurt Cobain, shortly before the tragic death of the Nirvana frontman.

Blabbermouth reports that McKagan spoke with VH1 Radio Networks’ Dave Basner about the experience. “We were both sort of in the same boat. A couple guys recognizing where each other was at,” he said. “It’s no fun being that completely and utterly addicted. And then we get off at Sea-Tac Airport and it’s like, there’s a mass rush of people, and all the sudden because it’s like him from a big band and me from a big band and all the sudden everybody just stopped and stared at us. Maybe I just remember it this way but everyone just stopped and we were like, ‘Okay… where do we go with this thing?’ But I went to baggage claim and that was it.”

Cobain shot himself sometime before April 8, 1994 when an electrician discovered his body. He left a suicide note: “I haven’t felt the excitement of listening to as well as creating music, along with really writing… for too many years now.”
