Slash Announces NYC Album Release Show

Slash, along with Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators, will celebrate the release of their new album, Apocalyptic Love, with a May 22 concert in New York City. The Tuesday night show falls on the same day the record becomes available in the U.S., according to Blabbermouth.

The May 22 gig will take place at Irving Plaza. A fan pre-sale begins at 10 a.m. on Wednesday (April 4) and the standard sale begins 10 a.m. on Friday (April 6) at SlashOnline.com.

In other Slash news, the guitar great and his band will stop by Jimmy Kimmel Live next week. On the April 10 show, the boys will perform Apocalyptic Love’s lead single, “You’re a Lie,” for the first time on TV. Fans who show up to the live taping in Hollywood will also get to see a mini-concert from Slash and the gang.

The day after (April 11), the band will perform at the Revolver Golden Gods Awards presented by Epiphone, and broadcast live via XboxLive.com from Los Angeles.

Rare Randy Rhoads/Ozzy Release: ‘Live’ Album

Loudwire reports that Ozzy Osbourne is paying tribute to the late Randy Rhoads with a newly available live recording album, only on vinyl. Ozzy plans to release Live – a 180-gram audiophile vinyl two-LP set – which is a limited, numbered collector’s edition recorded live on the 1981 Blizzard of Ozz tour. “Believer,” a live seven-inch single, also will be issued. It is a limited and numbered collector’s edition on polka-dot vinyl featuring “Believer” (live) and “Goodbye to Romance.”

For Record Store Day, Iggy and the Stooges’ album Raw Power will again be available on 12-inch vinyl – as will Paul Simon’s Graceland, Lou Reed’s Rock N Roll Animal and Transformer and Janis Joplin’s Pearl.

Record Store Day takes place on April 21 in independent record stores around the world.

The Rolling Stones to Release Documentary Spanning Entire Career

They may not be touring this year, but The Rolling Stones have other plans, as the gents have revealed plans to unleash a new documentary that will highlight every period of their career, right from their humble beginnings in 1962 up to this year’s 50th anniversary celebration, according to Rolling Stone. The flick, which has yet to claim a title, will be directed by The Kid Stays in the Picture director Brett Morgen and executive produced by the Stones. Look for it to debut at the rockers’ 50th anniversary celebration in September.

“For anyone who wants to experience the band, this is the film that will defy convention and create a sonic tapestry to transport viewers into the world of The Rolling Stones,” Morgen said in a release. “The film will deliver the original, bold, sexy and dangerous flavor of the iconic rock band.”

The documentary also promises dollops of never-before-seen shots from the band’s lost stashes and personal archives. “Nobody has put the story together as a narrative," Morgen told Rolling Stone. “We’ve been looking under every rock going through their archives. It will be music never heard before, and I've conducted 50-plus hours of interviews so far. By the time we’re done, they will be the most extensive group interviews they’ve ever done.

“He told me 80 percent of the footage has never been seen before, which amazes me,” Keith Richards told Rolling Stone. “I didn’t know there was that much around.”

Neil Young to Release Two New Albums with Crazy Horse

Neil Young has confirmed that he’s completed a new album with Crazy Horse, and that a second album with the band is “in progress.” The veteran rocker said he hopes to release both discs this year.

Young made the revelation at the Slamdance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, were he and director Jonathan Demme are presenting Journeys, their latest concert documentary, which was filmed in Toronto in May 2011.

Members of Crazy Horse last recorded with Young on his 2003 album, Greendale. The last Young album on which the entire band was featured was 1996’s Broken Arrow. In a 2005 interview with Performing Songwriter, Young described his work with Crazy Horse as “cosmic,” and as something he treated with “a special kind of respect.” “My work with Crazy Horse stands alone, in its own way,” he said. “Sometimes it needs to be replenished, sometimes it needs to be revisited, and sometimes it needs to be left alone.”

Judas Priest to Release Career-Spanning Box Set

If you’ve ever wanted to heavily delve into Judas Priest’s rich catalog, here’s your big chance. The metal legends have announced a 17-CD box set compiling their classic recordings, according to BraveWords.

Judas Priest’s The Complete Albums Collection will be released on January 24 via Columbia/Epic/Legacy. The set will include the first-ever, Priest-approved remasters of 1974’s Rocka Rolla and 1976’s Sad Wings of Destiny. Also featured is a 40-page booklet photos, credits and liner notes by Greg Prato.

Fear Factory Side Project Release New Song

City of Fire, the heavy rock band featuring Fear Factory’s Burton C. Bell and Byron Stroud, have released the first track from their forthcoming sophomore album, Trial Through Fire.

The song, “Bad Motivator,” was unveiled on the band’s Facebook page over the weekend, after earlier being sent out to fans who helped fund the album’s recording costs. A video for the track will debut shortly on Metal Hammer UK.

City of Fire consists of Bell, Stroud, guitarist Terry Murray and drummer Bob Wagner. When the band toured Australia and New Zealand in 2010, Stroud’s former Strapping Young Lad bandmate Jed Simon filled in on second guitar. The band has its roots in Caustic Thought, a classic late ’80s/early ’90s thrash band from Vancouver, Canada, who at one time counted a young Devin Townsend among its ranks.

The band’s 1994 self-titled album included a cover of The B-52s’ “Planet Claire.”

Trial Through Fire will be released in March or April.

Patti Smith to Release Career-Spanning Compilation

Punk poet and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Patti Smith has announced she will release her first single-disc, career-spanning retrospective this summer. Outside Society will include highlights of Smith’s recordings from 1975 to 2007.

The collection, due on August 23, will feature material from both her tenure with Arista and Columbia. Selections include “Gloria” from 1975’s Horses, “Because the Night” from 1978’s Easter, “Dancing Barefoot” from 1979’s Wave, “People Have the Power” from 1988’s Dream of Life and “Glitter in Their Eyes” from 2000’s Gung Ho. The collection also includes her radically different version of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” from 2007.

The album booklet will include track-by-track notes from Smith. Her recollection of “Because the Night” (via  a press release):  “Bruce Springsteen gave me a great gift in allowing me to lend verses to his beautifully constructed anthem. My contribution was written for my future husband, Fred ‘Sonic’ Smith. Though we have performed it hundreds of times, the strong response it draws always makes it fresh and exciting to sing.”

Red Hot Chili Peppers Release New Album Tracklisting

The tracklisting for Red Hot Chili Peppers’ 10th album, I’m With You has been announced.

According to NME.com, the record will be released August 29 and was produced by Rick Rubin. Earlier reports have suggested that the album would be titled, Dr. Johnny Skinz's Disproportionately Rambunctious Polar Express Machine-head.

New Anthrax Album Gets Release Date

Anthrax’s new album, Worship Music, is tentatively due out on September 13 in the U.S. and September 12 in Europe. The metal titans will put out the record on Megaforce Records in the U.S. and Nuclear Blast Records overseas, according to Blabbermouth.net.

The album has been in the works for more than a couple years. Originally, the band worked with singer Dan Nelson, but those tracks were scrapped when Joey Belladonna returned to the group. As it happens, Worship Music will be the first Anthrax album to feature Belladonna on vocals in two decades.

“Some of the songs we tweaked, some of the songs we did more than tweak,” Anthrax’s drummer Charlie Benante said to Revolver magazine. “Some we started from scratch, and some were written just for this album.”

Yes to Release First Studio Album in 10 Years

Yes will release their first studio album in 10 years on July 1. Fly From Here will be the veteran band’s 20th studio album. It’s the follow-up to 2001’s Magnification and sees the band back with producer Trevor Horn.

The current Yes lineup is Benoit David on vocals, Steve Howe on guitars/vocals, founder Chris Squire on bass/vocals, Geoff Downes on keyboards and Alan White on drums. Roger Dean, the artist behind Yes’ best-known album covers also returns for Fly From Here.

“At last we have some shape and dynamics within these tracks that are truer to the original idea of what a Yes recording is about,” Howe said in a statement.

First formed in 1968, YES have sold nearly 50 million albums worldwide and this summer will return to the road with new tracks Fly From Here as well as their classic material.

Coldplay Release New Single on 3 June

Coldplay will unveil their comeback single on Friday, June 3. “Every Teardrop is a Waterfall” will stream from the band’s official website, with the download going on sale this weekend. 

Rumors have been rife about Coldplay’s new songs. Drummer Will Champion recently posted on the band’s site: “We’re about to play a bunch of summer festivals so it’s as good a time as any to put out a new song.” Among the lyrics: “I turn the music up/ I got my records on/ from underneath the rubble” and “Every siren is a symphony/ every tear’s a waterfall.”

Speaking to Q magazine in November 2010, frontman Chris Martin said the follow-up to Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends is inspired by “’70s graffiti art and Germany's anti-Nazi White Rose movement.” He added that the new album will be “group-y” and “guitar-y,” with a title that “will probably begin with an M.”

Brian Eno is once again in the producer’s chair. Coldplay return to the stage on June 4 at the Rock im Park festival in Nuremberg, Germany.

Bono and The Edge Release <em>Spider-Man</em> Single

U2’s Bono and The Edge have released the lead-off single from the Music from Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark album. They back singer Reeve Carney on “Rise Above 1.”

Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark is the Broadway musical with songs written by Bono and The Edge and starring Reeve Carney (from rock band Carney) in the lead role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man, while Carney, his band, act as the musical’s orchestra.

The single, “Rise Above 1,” was produced by Alex Da Kid, while June’s forthcoming album Music From Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark was overseen by U2 production mainstay Steve Lillywhite.

The Spider-Man musical got off to a rocky start for Bono and The Edge with constant delays and rewrites, as well as some technical accidents. However, previews are now happening at New York City’s Foxwoods Theatre. The musical officially opens June 14, and Bono today insisted everything is back on track.

He told the Hollywood Reporter, “We’re opening Spider-Man on the 14th. I promise it’s not been cancelled, and we’re very excited about it. It’s almost there, it will be there by opening night.”

Blondie to Release First New Album in 8 Years

Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Blondie have announced that they will release a new album this fall. Rolling Stone magazine has reported that Panic of Girls is due out in September.

However, the album will also be available on June 1 as part of a limited edition “fan pack,” via Blondie’s website. The special release comes with a 132-page magazine that delves into the making of the album, the band’s history and more.

Panic of Girls, the band’s first album since 2003’s The Curse of Blondie, features a song called “Mother” as its lead single. The album was produced by Killers collaborator Jeff Saltzman and Paramore producer Kato Khandwala. It features co-founders Debbie Harry, Chris Stein and Clem Burke along with contributions from The Cars’ Elliot Easton.

Silly Love Songs: Paul McCartney to Release Standards Album

John Lennon used to chide his partner, Paul McCartney, at times for playing what Lennon called “granny music,” but those barbs never dissuaded Macca from occasionally visiting the styles and sounds of previous generations. Now, McCartney is apparently set to revisit some of the standards that played over the radio airwaves during his youth with a new album of covers.

“It’s my dad’s style of music,” he told Rolling Stone. “I’ve wanted to do that kind of thing forever, since the Beatle days. But then Rod [Stewart] went mad on it. I thought, ‘I have to wait so it doesn’t look like I’m trying to do a Rod.’”

As far as the selections, McCartney said, “They’re just songs I admire, I’m trying to steer away from the obvious ones. It’s get-home-from-work music. You put it on and get a glass of wine.”

Fans of “Rock Show” Paul McCartney needn’t worry, though. The former Beatle said that he also is planning an album of “heavier rock.” His hope is to enlist the services of Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl.

“It sounds quite wacky, but it keeps it fresh,” he said. “I love that – you get a crazy idea and go with it. You never know – I may run into a garage to make this other album. But it won’t be in Dave’s garage.”

Arcade Fire to Release Deluxe Edition of <em>The Suburbs</em>

It appears The Suburbs are going to get a little more sprawling. Arcade Fire have plans to reissue their Grammy-winner for Album of the Year in a deluxe edition. 

BBC 1 radio DJ Zane Lowe reported that the Canadian band will include two new songs – “Speaking in Tongues” and “Culture War” – on this version, which will be released on June 27. The deluxe edition also will include a DVD with the Spike Jonze short film, Scenes from the Suburbs, and a documentary on the making of the album.

Lowe said he will debut the new songs on the radio on May 23.

As Gibson.com recently reported, band member Will Butler describes Scenes from the Suburbs as a mix between 12 Monkeys, E.T. and Red Dawn.

Bret Michaels to Release Miley Cyrus Duet, New Album

Bret Michaels has revealed that his new album will be available this summer, according to HollywoodLife.com. Titled Get Your Rock On, the record will be released on June 14, one week into the upcoming Motley Crue/Poison tour.

Michaels said that this album will be “harder” and that the major influences on this release include Garth Brooks, John Mellencamp, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Aerosmith.

“This one is primarily straight-up rock songs, which I think people will like,” the singer said. “I’ve written a lot of good stuff over the last few years that I think are just good rock songs. I feel really strong about it.”

In addition, Michaels’ duet with Miley Cyrus on “Every Rose Has its Thorn” is going to see an official release… but only in Australia. A source told E! News that it will hit the airwaves down under this summer, to promote Cyrus’ first tour of the country, which begins June 21. There’s no word if “Thorn” will eventually be available anywhere else.
