Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood Wins More Radio Awards

Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood now has a flourishing broadcasting career. On Wednesday, Wood received two prestigious radio awards in London.

Last year, Wood began broadcasting his own show on the Absolute Classic Rock radio station and picked up the Music Radio Personality of the Year honor at the Sony Radio Academy Awards. He now can add to that award, the Specialist Programme of the Year and Newcomer of the Year honors from London's Arqiva Commercial Radio awards.

Legendary DJ, David "Kid" Jensen was given the Lifetime Achievement Award. Jensen, alongside his good friend John Peel, was hugely influential in breaking indie music in the U.K. in the '70s and '80s.

Glenn Hughes Gets Weekly Radio Show

Glenn Hughes, the Deep Purple, Trapeze and now Black Country Communion singer and bass guitarist will begin a one hour weekly radio show on Planet Rock(planetrock.com) on Sunday June 5th at 6pm GMT. 

Every week, Hughes will choose his favorite rock songs and tell stories from his long and glittering career.

"I would like to thank Planet Rock for giving me the opportunity to share with listeners the songs that have shaped my life,” said Hughes in a statement.  “Every song is chosen by me, and there will be rock 'n’ roll stories along the away. I am a messenger.”

“Hughes continues Planet Rock’s tradition of bringing rock’s biggest names to the airwaves,” said Planet Rock’s Program Director, Trevor White.  “After a career spanning 40 years, he brings a wealth of stories from his life on the road, in the studio, his friendships with the likes of Keith Moon and Bonzo, the highs, the lows, and of course, the excesses.  His choice of music will make the show a must listen.”

The series will run on Planet Rock on Sunday evenings at 6 pm – 7 pm beginning June 5.

The news of Glenn’s Planet Rock radio series coincides with the June 13 U.K. release of Black Country Communion’s highly anticipated second album, 2, and their upcoming U.K. tour.

Gerard Smith of TV On The Radio is Dead

Gerard Smith, bass player for who played bass for the Brooklyn band TV On The Radio, died today (April 20) from lung cancer.

The band’s website announced the news: “We are very sad to announce the death of our beloved friend and bandmate, Gerard Smith, following a courageous fight against lung cancer. Gerard passed away the morning of April 20th, 2011. We will miss him terribly.”

Gerard Smith had been with TV On The Radio since 2005 and played on their most recent release Nine Types of Light. Smith had not been on the road with the band, who were touring in support of the album, so he could be treated for his condition.

Radio Ga Ga: Queen’s Brian May and Lady Gaga Team Up

Legendary Queen guitarist Brian May plays guitar on a track on Lady Gaga’s new album, Born This Way, according to The Daily Mirror. The two musicians paired up for the song “You & I.”

“It’s always been Gaga’s dream to perform as Queen. If it wasn’t for Queen, there would be no Gaga,” a source told The Daily Mirror. “This collaboration with Brian May means the world to her.”

Of course, Lady Gaga famously took her name from a Queen song, “Radio Ga Ga,” thanks to producer Rob Fusari. In the past, Gaga (whose real name is Stefani Germanotta) has credited Queen frontman Freddie Mercury as one of her big influences.

“Freddie was unique – one of the biggest personalities in the whole of pop music,” she said. “He was not only a singer but a fantastic performer, a man of the theater, who constantly transformed himself.”

Born This Way will be released on May 23.

TV on the Radio Well-Rested for Return

Three years after their album Dear Science cracked the U.S. Top 20, the experimental Brooklyn alt-rock group, TV on the Radio, have returned with a new album, Nine Types of Light, and a renewed energy – thanks to an uncharacteristic hiatus.

“The strangest thing about the hiatus is that I actually didn’t realize that it was an official thing,” singer Tunde Adebimpe told ClashMusic.com. “But we definitely did need to take a break, at least from touring, for everyone’s individual sanities.”

During the group’s downtime, Tunde fell back on some old habits. “Drawing and writing, filmmaking and a visual re-education for myself,” he said. “Just stuff that I’ve always been doing, but it was nice to not have to be anywhere every day for a year.”

As for the layoff, Tunde doesn’t think it will affect the group long-term:

“I remember picking up two Breeders records that came out, and being shocked that the previous record had came out seven years beforehand. They didn’t stop existing in my mind,” he said. “Hopefully the interest is still there [for us] – and if it’s not, there are other things to be done.”
