Gibson Exclusive: Matt Swanson on Ace Frehley ‘Budokan’ Les Paul Custom

Gibson Custom recently announced that it had recreated one of the most famous guitars in music history – the Ace Frehley “Budokan” Les Paul Custom. It was the “Budokan” Les Paul that the KISS legend played throughout 1977-78, just as the band were becoming world superstars. For the new, limited run of Ace Frehley “Budokan” Les Paul Custom guitars, the Custom Shop worked closely with Ace as well as the guitar’s current owner, collector and KISS superfan Matt Swanson.

During a recent trip to Gibson Custom in Nashville, Tennessee, Swanson sat down for a chat about the unique attributes of the “Budokan” guitar that, through the Custom Shop’s detailed and perfectly accurate recreations, can now be owned by other guitar fans.

Gibson Exclusive: Ace Frehley Talks ‘Budokan’ Les Paul Custom

Gibson Custom has recreated one of the most famous guitars in music history – the Ace Frehley “Budokan” Les Paul Custom. The master craftsmen at the Custom Shop have forged this tribute to the KISS guitarist’s most famous axe. Frehley nicknamed his Les Paul “Budokan” because it was the very guitar he played when KISS broke The Beatles' sell-out record at Japan’s legendary Budokan arena in 1977. It also was Ace’s main touring guitar throughout ’77 and ’78, was his go-to studio guitar after that and was used in the 1996 KISS reunion.

With the Ace Frehley “Budokan” Les Paul Custom, Gibson Custom has painstakingly recreated every single one of the idiosyncrasies of Ace’s customized guitar, drawing on digital scanning technology and working closely with Frehley and the guitar’s current owner, Matt Swanson. When Frehley recently took one of the guitars for a spin, he was amazed at how much the guitar felt, played and sounded like the real deal.

Check out Gibson’s exclusive interview with Ace below, in which he shows off the new “Budokan” Les Paul Custom, talks about KISS’s early days and shares some stories from his new book, No Regrets.

Red Hot Chili Peppers to Perform at Exclusive New Year’s Eve Bash

The Red Hot Chili Peppers are set to perform at perhaps the world’s most expensive New Year’s Eve bash, London’s The Telegraph has reported. Roman Abramovich, the billionaire Russian oligarch known for throwing extravagant parties, has hired the veteran rockers to entertain at the exclusive event, which will be held at Abramovich’s estate on the Caribbean island of St Barts. The 45-year-old Abramovich, who owns the Chelsea football club, is spending more than 5 million pounds (approximately $7,850,000) to entertain the 300 guests expected to attend. Those invited have been told to wear “island chic” to the celebration, which will run from 10 pm to 4 am. The Chili Peppers take-home pay for the performance has not been revealed. In other news, however, the New York Post has reported that Stevie Wonder will be compensated $1 million to sing at this year’s New Year’s Eve celebration at the Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas.
