NHL Player Rewarded for Giving Ride to Hitchhiking Bono

U2 fans might want to give more than a cursory glance to any hitchhikers they encounter from this point forward. On Tuesday (May 31), Edmonton Oilers hockey player Gilbert Brule gave a lift to a hitchhiking pedestrian who turned out to be… Bono. The U2 frontman and his assistant were walking in West Vancouver, British Columbia, when it began to rain. Brule and his girlfriend happened to drive by, and Bono accepted their offer for a ride.

As a gesture of thanks, Bono gave Brule and his girlfriend backstage passes for the U2 show at Edmonton’s Commonwealth Stadium the following night.

“I like people who play ice hockey – they stop for hitchhikers,” Bono told the concert crowd, according to the Associated Press. “I know this from experience. I was hitchhiking in Vancouver yesterday, actually I was! And this guy and his girlfriend picked me up. He was cool, an ice hockey player. His name was Gilbert Brule as it happens. I’m so grateful I’ve decided I want to be Gilbert Brule."

Bono later referred to The Edge as “the Wayne Gretzky of U2.”
