<em>Mean Streets</em> Singer Dead at 85

Italian-American crooner Jimmy Roselli, whose song “Mala Femmena” was featured in the soundtrack of Martin Scorsese’s 1973 classic, Mean Streets, has died. He was 85 years old.

According to NME.com, Roselli passed away at his home in Venice Beach, Florida yesterday. The Hoboken, New Jersey native had retired from music in 2004, ending a 69-year career that included the hits, “There Must Be Another Way” and “When Your Old Wedding Ring was New.”

Roselli is survived by his wife Donna, his daughter Anne and his grandson Michael. His funeral will take place next week.

Original Coasters Singer Carl Gardner is Dead

Carl Gardner, the original lead singer with The Coasters, has died. He passed in Port St. Lucie, Florida on Sunday June 12. He was 83 and had been suffering from congestive heart failure and vascular dementia.

One of the great vocal groups of the ’50s, The Coasters were one of the first black groups to crossover to mainstream chart success. It was Gardner’s voice on their best-known songs like “Yakety Yak,” “Poison Ivy” and “Searchin.”

Gardner retired in 1985 with his son Carl, Jr. taking over as the lead singer of The Coasters.

Mastodon Singer Does Surf-Rock?

Mastodon are one of the heaviest bands on the planet, but singer-guitarist Brent Hinds is going in a different direction on his upcoming solo double-disc release. Brent Hinds Presents Fiend Without a Face/West End Motel is due out on June 7.

Hinds told Rolling Stone that the first disc takes his music in a surf-rock direction, while the second deals in “boozy poetry.” The albums aren’t out yet, but the musician is already talking about doing more.

“We’re just finishing up anotherWest End Motel album, and then when [Mastodon] get back from Europe,” Hinds said, “we’re going back into the studio with Fiend Without a Face, and I’m going to have Brann [Dailor, Mastodon’s drummer] and Jay Weinberg, Max Weinberg's kid, play on the record – have a rotating door of drummer guests. It’ll be a proggy sort of album.”

Of course, Hinds also talked about Mastodon’s upcoming fifth album, which the band have been working on with producer Mike Elizondo. Confirmed song titles for the disc, due later this year, include “Blasteroids” and “All the Heavy Lifting.”

“It sounds pretty different than anything we've ever done,” Hinds said. “It’s un-comparable!”

Next up for Mastodon: a summer European tour and a one-off show with Soundgarden, Queens of the Stone Age and the Meat Puppets in Washington on July 30.

Singer Wants to Reunite Fall Out Boy Before He’s 40

It may be less than two years since Fall Out Boy went on indefinite hiatus, but singer Patrick Stump says he’s open to reuniting sooner rather than later.

Stump took to his blog to respond to an article in last week’s Alternative Press, which claimed he said he doesn’t want to play material he wrote when he was 17 when he is 40 (Stump is 27 now). “That quote is way taken out of context,” he said. “As is the implication that I ‘don’t want to do Fall Out Boy when I’m 40’ (which is literally not a quote of mine). All I meant by any of it is that I don’t want to wait until I’m 40 to do another Fall Out Boy record, and if it takes that long, then I won’t do one.”

Stump went on to say he is confident that the band will have a new album out sooner rather than later, but that there are currently no plans. “No ‘two years,’ no ‘six years,’ no parameters,” he said. “It might happen later than any of that, it might happen sooner. It is literally, as it’s always been, an indefinite hiatus. We never did breakup, we’re still friends, and we still would like to make music together.”

Stump then called for the issue to be put to rest. “I think I’ve talked about it enough in the past two years and if anything it’s silly talking about hypotheticals in detail,” he said. “…from here on until Fall Out Boy does have actual news, I’m going to just not talk about it.”

Lady Antebellum Singer Talks Third Album

Following the success of the blockbuster 2010 album, Need You Now, is no small task for Nashville hit-makers Lady Antebellum. Powered by the single “I Run to You” and the hit title track, Need You Now topped charts all over the world and garnered a boatload of awards. Nevertheless, the trio of Charles Kelley, Dave Haywood and Hillary Scott are hard at work on a follow-up.

Kelley told Undercover.fm, “We’re a little over halfway done right now and we’re excited to get some new music out there. Again, we’re just trying to keep our heads down and not over-think this thing. With the success of Need You Now, everyone keeps asking us, ‘How are you going to follow that up?’ – and I don’t know how to answer that. You just go in there and do what you do and hopefully it’ll be received well.”

According to Kelley, the important thing is to make music the band can take pride in.

“It’ll be hard to match the same success as that,” he said. “I think we just try and keep that in perspective and just keep making music that we’re proud of and it’ll take whatever course it’s going to take.”
