Scales Made Easy: Using Visual Patterns In Composition

Visual patterns are a great way of learning scales. Most of us are very familiar with the minor pentatonic pattern, which looks like a slightly squashed box when laid out on the fretboard. And three-note-per-string patters are a great way of adding some Holdsworthian angularity to your soloing. And we recently looked at symmetrical scales as a way of adding some spice to a fast lead guitar lick. But there’s another visual trick I like to employ from time to time to come up with new riffs and licks. And it’s so ridiculously simple that you can even use it when you’re nowhere near a guitar, or if you have no working knowledge of music theory at all. There’s no particular name for this technique, so let’s just call it the visual pattern method.

A lot of us have used visual patterns without even knowing it, in the form of a famous fretboard warm-up exercise. I’m sure you’re all familiar with this one:

The idea is simple: play four consecutive notes, move down one string and along one fret, and continue. It’s a great pattern to warm up each of your fingers individually because it forces you to move from string to string as well as eventually along the whole fretboard. And if you play it fast enough, it’s an almost-chromatic, slightly seasick-sounding lick that you can use to connect one section of a solo to another. But there are other patterns you can try out. Play the following notes and notice the inverted triangle shape they make on the fretboard. I’ve laid the pattern out in four different locations on the neck, one for each bar, and when played consecutively they make for a pretty nice harmonic contour.

The great thing about using a method like this to find a neat-sounding note combination is that you can then go back to your theory books and find a scale that contains those notes. For instance, the notes in the first bar (A, C#, D#, E and G#) are contained within the many keys including A Lydian (A, B, C#, D#, E, F#, G#), G# Phrygian (G#, A, B, C#, D#, E, F#) and F# Dorian (F#, G#, A, B, C#, D#, E). The most obvious of these is A Lydian because the lick starts on an A and you can use a ringing open A string as a drone to play over, but some really unusual and interesting textures present themselves when you try playing over the other notes, too.

Of course, you can use any shape or pattern you like in your search for ideas. Circles, ovals, squares, zig zags… I like to use an X pattern as a high-speed sweet picking/hammer-on lick. Play it over an F#5 power chord for the first bar and E5 for the second. I’ve included the pick sweeping directions, but feel free to slow this lick down and play it as an alternate picked exercise.

Another interesting pattern (which works best across the bottom four strings) is actually related to an established scale that is popular in avant-garde and modern classical music: the Whole Tone Scale. This is a particularly weird sounding scale because it doesn’t resolve the way typical scales do. And Frank Zappa uses it to great effect on the solo to “Outside Now” on his Broadway the Hard Way album from 1988. Every note of this scale is a whole tone away from the last, and all you need to do is play it through in ascending order a couple of times and you’ve played all 12 notes, so it can be played in any key. From a visual perspective, the Whole Tone Scale is easy to remember because it looks like parallel diagonal lines. In the example below I’ve presented it as a three-note-per-string scale as well as a four-note-per-string scale. What I really like about this scale is that you can create some really out-there melodies out of its constituent notes, or you can simply play it linearly and exploit the “forever climbing” nature of the scale’s lack of resolution.

I’ll leave you with this fun little way of employing patterns to extremely dramatic effect: letters. Try spelling words on the fretboard. You could space these all out over the fretboard in a row, but for some real atonal fun, stack them all on top of each other. See if you can identify the word in the example below, which spells out the word “Gibson.” I’ve used a few different approaches here: tracing the letters in a line for the G and I, then outlining the shape of the B, then tracing the S, outlining the O and approaching the N with some very unorthodox chords (just barring across each string to represent the sides of the letter). I’ve presented this in 4/4 with very even rhythms so you can easily get from one pattern to another. The result is a harmonically and rhythmically interesting jazz-fusion sound, especially thanks to those dense chords at the end.

Scales Tricks: Three-Note-Per-String-Scales and Neck Gymnastics

The three-note-per-string pattern is one of the easiest ways of remembering scales on the guitar, and it’s a format that lends itself especially well to high-speed playing techniques like economy picking or legato, too. And they work equally well as a springboard for melodic ideas and as finger-warming exercises. Here are a few tricks that I’ve put to extensive use in my own playing.

While pretty much any scale can be configured into three-note-per-string patterns, the Major Scale is an ideal candidate. What I like most about the Major Scale when viewed as a three-note-per-string scale is that it’s made up of three sets of repeating patterns. Here we see the Major Scale in the key of A.

There are many ways you can play this as an exercise: strict alternate picking; picking the first note and hammering the rest; picking the first note, sliding to the second and hammering to the third; or economy picking, where you pick down/up/down, move to the next string and continue the down-up-down pattern. Another great thing about playing this scale this way is that the fourths and fifths – which are great for hard rock harmonies – are very easy to visualize on the fretboard, so composing and teaching harmonies in the intervals quickly is very easy.

The Minor Scale also can be turned into a three-note-per-string pattern, although be aware that you lose the nice “same pattern on two strings” layout out the Major Scale once you get to the final pair of strings. Still, if you remain mindful that the high and low E strings contain the same notes, you won’t get too lost when you reach the end of the pattern.

The Minor Scale works particularly well when performing string-skipping techniques. Play a three-note sequence on a string, skip over the next string and play the comparable sequence on the string after that. This is a good way of adding a slight Paul Gilbert vibe to your licks.

The Lydian Mode – known for its floating, dreamy feel, is very similar to the A Major scale and can be easily adapted to a three-note-per-string format, too. This one is especially satisfying when using legato techniques. Try lots of hammer-ons with some smooth overdrive and long delay for a Satriani feel.

 

But as with most other things of a musical nature, it’s when you start to mess with them and break out of the established boxes that you really start to get to the good stuff. For instance, the first six notes of the Minor Scale are particularly useful for a very neat trick often employed by Dream Theater’s John Petrucci. If you play a simple riff or lick using those notes on the lowest two strings then transpose them to the adjacent string pair in the next octave, and then again in the next octave, you can create sprawling multi-octave licks with a real sense of movement.

 

But you don’t need to think purely in terms of three-note-per-string patterns for this trick to work: any lick that runs over two strings can be easily shifted to the next pair of strings in a higher octave.

Finally, here’s a similar idea using the Major Scale in the key of E. I’ve selected this key because it will comfortably take you from near the very top of the guitar’s range to the very bottom. There’s only one pattern to remember, and each part of the lick is played with the same exact notes, so once you know where your octaves are you can really cut loose. This lick is also great for training your fretting hand to be comfortable moving across the length of the neck.

A final word for carrying these scales over to seven-string guitars: just remember that the low B string of a seven-string is just a lower octave version of the notes you’ll find on the “regular” B string. So any of these scales can be easily carried over to a seven-string guitar by simply playing the same three notes on the low B that you would play on the high B. After all, there’s no law which says that seven-string players must play the root note of every scale on the B string.

How to Fake it Like Eddie Van Halen: Symmetrical Scales

Symmetrical scales are one of the most fun – and easiest to wrap your head around – ways of making harmonically interesting music without having to spend 10 years at music school (although if you can afford to spend 10 years at music school, please do, then tell me all about it so I may live vicariously though you, ’cos that sounds rad!). Two very well known exponents of the symmetrical scale are Eddie Van Halen and Dimebag Darrell. Darrell was quite open about borrowing the idea from Eddie, whose most famous example of the technique can be heard on his solo to “Ice Cream Man” from Van Halen’s self-titled debut. Eddie’s “Ice Cream Man” solo starts in the key of the song but quickly evolves into a bizarre, out-there-sounding tumble through cascading note flurries.

So what is a symmetrical scale, and how does it help you to rock? Well, it’s simply a “fake” scale made up of repeating the same fret pattern on each string. That is to say: playing a symmetrical pattern on each string. It’s not really a scale in the traditional sense, since it actually incorporates fragments of all sorts of different “real” scales.

A word of caution before we go any further: some of the coolest-sounding symmetrical scales can involve very wide fretboard stretches, so make sure that you warm up your hands first. And for maximum rock power and ergonomic freedom, point your guitar headstock skyward to better align your hand with your fretboard. Seriously, don’t do this stuff until you’re warmed up.

Seriously.

Okay, now that this ominous warning of proper tendon care is out of the way, let’s look at some musical examples. Each of these is designed to be played over a simple 8th-note palm-muted E5 power chord vamp at 100bpm – just count “1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8” per bar as you chug away.

What you’re seeing in Figure 1 (Below) is a scale made up of the 12th, 13th and 15th frets of each string. The notes are E F G A A# C D D# F G G# A B C D E F G. As you’ll see, you don’t get a nice repeated octave until you get to the very last string, since both the lowest and highest strings are tuned to E. There’s something coolly robotic about this particular scale, and it also makes a nice hammer-on exercise. 

Figure 2 is cleverly designed to include a lot of repetitions of the same note on different strings, which should lead to some pretty interesting melodies.

Figure 3 is a lick constructed using the same pattern as Figure 2, but this time it’s got some melody goin’ on, rather than just being a scale run-through. I’ve purposely left off any kind of articulation here because there are many ways you could do it: you could pick every note; you could tap each of the 17th fret notes (and perform a “hammer-on from nowhere” when you need to switch strings immediately after the tapped note the second note of bar two); you could pick only the first note on each string and hammer or slide the rest – the choice is up to you. You can even create symmetrical patterns that require a bend from a specific fret on each string.

Now, of course, make up your own symmetrical scale and see what happens. Obviously you can make the stretches as wide as you like, especially if you decide to tap a note or two. You also don’t need to confine yourself to one pattern per string. Why not make a two-string pattern that you repeat? As always, have at it and have fun!
