Dream Theater: New Drummer is a ‘Monster’

Drummer and co-founder Mike Portnoy left Dream Theater in September 2010, but the prog-metal band are carrying on. Mike Mangini was recently named the new drummer for Dream Theater, after lengthy auditions. Dream Theater recently brought in Richard Chycki as their new producer/engineer, and Chycki has taken to his blog to post about his tasks.

Chycki says in his post that “Over the past weeks, I’ve been in the studio with long-time friend James LaBrie of Dream Theater, recording vocals for the band’s new album that is quickly nearing completion. I gotta tell ya, new drummer Mike Mangini is a monster player on the album. I worked with him on LaBrie’s solo album Elements of Persuasion in 2005 and he was frightening (in a good way!) in the studio back then.”

Guitarist John Petrruci has told Artisan News Service, “Mangini is a permanent band member… We don’t want to be known as the temporary Dream Theater, we want a member.”

Dream Theater Readies Official Drummer Announcement

The long wait for the announcement of the new Dream Theater drummer is almost over, with details of the announcement to be made public on Thursday, April 21.

The band’s label, Roadrunner Records, has advised fans to head to the band’s Facebook page at 11 a.m. (EST) on that date to sign up for the mailing list and to receive details about an exclusive look at the audition process and to find out exactly when and how the new member will be named.

Dream Theater conducted three days of intense auditions with seven drummers in New York City just over a month after Mike Portnoy parted ways with the group. “The departure of our lifelong bandmate and friend was an unexpected and truly heartbreaking blow,” guitarist John Petrucci said. “The fact that as a result of that event we’d be introduced to seven infinitely capable and uniquely talented drummers was heartening.”
