Jim James is about to push My Morning Jacket’s sixth album, Circuital, dropping on May 31. But he also has a solo album nearly done.
According to The A.V. Club, James says he is “80 percent done” on his solo album, which has a planned release date of early 2012. It will be James’ first official solo album, not counting the 2009 EP of George Harrison covers, Tribute To…, released under the moniker Yim Yames.
James says his own album is “a comfortably lounging around the house thing, doing whatever I wanted whenever I wanted. I just love playing all sorts of different instruments, so I just wanted to be able to do that, and mess around with whatever I wanted to.”
James admits that his solo songs might be performed by My Morning Jacket, but that a mysterious “genetic code” within the tunes means “they tell me they want to be on a solo record.”
No word on if the solo album was laid down in the same manner as MMJ’s Circuital, which was partly recorded in a gymnasium “for the reverb.” The band previously used grain silos as reverb chambers.
