My Morning Jacket’s Jim James Shows Love for Mike & The Mechanics

My Morning Jacket may be known for their perfectly distilled blend of southern rock, soul and a dash of the avant garde, but that doesn’t mean all of singer-guitarist Jim James’ influences are hipster-approved. James recently listed his influences for Spin.com and one entry, in particular, stood out from the bunch: the Genesis/Squeeze offshoot, Mike & The Mechanics and their 1985 hit, “Silent Running (On Dangerous Ground).”

“Some say there is a massive astrological shift taking place right now as dictatorships topple in Egypt and people rise up in mass numbers in places like Wisconsin and Ohio to fight for what they believe is right,” James said. “We are seeing large sections of the population fundamentally questioning their experience and existence, perhaps spurred on by this new revolutionary spirit of longing for real freedom… or perhaps spurred on by this Mike + the Mechanics song, which somehow speaks to me about all that is going on in the world right now. Somehow. It spoke to me once as a child. And it found me again the other day in the freezer section at Whole Foods. 'Can you hear me running?' Yes, Mike. I can.”

The Gibson Video Interview: Jean Beauvoir

To say Jean Beauvoir has had a colorful career would be a bit of an understatement. The Haitian-born musician served as Gary U.S. Bonds’ musical director at the ripe old age of 13, followed by stints with other ’50s legends, including Chuck Berry and The Flamingos. From there, he took a dramatic left turn and joined the punk band The Plasmatics. Following a solo career and two albums with Steven Van Zandt, Beauvoir moved into songwriting and producing, cutting tracks with some of the biggest acts in the world, including KISS, The Ramones, The Pretenders, Debbie Harry and others. Since the early ’90s, he has fronted his own hard rock band, Crown of Thorns. Recently, Beauvoir and his band held court in Gibson’s New York City Showroom.

The Offspring Testing New Songs on 5-Year-Olds?

The Offspring are “12 or 13” songs into the writing process for their new album, according to the band’s official podcast. The forthcoming release will be the group’s first since 2008’s Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace.

“It’s going to be great,” frontman Dexter Holland said. “It’s going to be the best damn record we ever did.”

He also said that the reactions of a five-year-old provided the telltale sign of how good the new songs were.

“You know what’s a really good sign?” Holland asked. “When you are working on a song and you play it for a niece or nephew, or a young kid, preferably about five and if it sticks with that kid and you hear them humming it later in the day!”

Liam Gallagher: Beady Eye’s Second Album is ‘Coming Soon’

Liam Gallagher has said that his new band Beady Eye plan to start on their next album sooner rather than later. In an interview with the Irish Times, Gallagher promises that Beady Eye will not “put the ball down, sit around in a big house and go ‘we’re great. We won’t be booking into the studio for months and months on end. We’re not going to be rolling over this album into the next year. There will be an awesome second album coming soon.”

Self-confidence has never been in sort supply with Gallagher and he’s convinced that Beady Eye have what it takes. “I want us to be as big as The Beatles, as big as The Stones,” he said. “I want our music to stand the test of time. I could go on before The Beatles, I could go on after The Beatles – all of us in this band could. It’s that great.”

Ancestors of Lennon and McCartney Revealed in New Records

More than 500 years worth of Liverpool, England’s historical documents are now available online, shedding light on the ancestors of Beatles John Lennon and Paul McCartney – their baptisms, marriages and other public records.

Available for the first time today via Ancestry.co.uk, the collection includes upwards of three million documents, among them the records of each of Lennon’s grandparents’ baptisms and their marriage, as well as McCartney’s grandparents’ marriage record.

“While these records are hugely significant to anyone with Liverpudlian roots, they will also be of huge interest to anyone tracing Irish ancestry – with recent research revealing Liverpool has the strongest Irish heritage of any English city,” said historian Annabel Bernhardt-Reeves to the Liverpool Daily Post.

“As well as having vast historical and genealogical value, these records are also incredibly interesting from a cultural perspective, detailing the heritage of two of the biggest stars the country has ever produced – John Lennon and Paul McCartney. Our researchers didn’t know who they would uncover when digging around in these records, and were thrilled when they uncovered half of the members of the legendary band The Beatles – two of Liverpool’s most famous exports.”

This Day in Music Spotlight: Sinead O’Connor Goes 2 Number 1

Special thanks to ThisDayinMusic.com.

The music business is a funny thing. It’s where a prolific and talented singer-songwriter like Sinead O’Connor can have her biggest hit – by far – with a song written by someone else. It’s where a legendary pop music hit-maker like Prince can have his greatest success as a songwriter with a recording sung by another artist. That’s exactly what happened to Prince and Sinead when “Nothing Compares 2 U” began a four-week run at the top of the Billboard charts on this day in 1990.

Prince had written the ballad back at the height of his fame in the early ’80s. With too many songs and not enough albums to put them on, the multi-talented writer/performer had taken to doling out material to his associated acts, signed to his label, Paisley Park. One such act was called The Family, which had come out of the demise of The Time. Prince helped create the new band by putting together two members from the Time, Susannah Melvoin (twin sister of Revolution guitarist Wendy Melvoin), Eric Leeds and frontman St. Paul (Paul Peterson).

Prince wrote all of the songs, save for one penned by Revolution drummer Bobby Z., for The Family’s debut album, which he treated like his own releases – meaning that he played every instrument and sung on the recordings himself. He did this in late 1984, then overdubbed Peterson and Melvoin’s vocals and added flute and saxophone by Leeds.

Yet, to make The Family appear more like a real, recording outfit, Prince gave his songwriting credits to members of the band. But he must have had a special feeling about the sixth track on the album, an R&B ballad titled “Nothing Compares 2 U.” When The Family’s self-titled record was released in August of ’85, it was the only song credited to Prince.

The album didn’t fare well and the band broke up soon after, with many members joining Prince’s Revolution backing band. The Family’s lone album was mostly forgotten, and wasn’t even re-released on CD (like Prince’s older albums) toward the end of the decade. While the record faded into obscurity, one of its songs came roaring back after a few years.

Irish singer-songwriter Sinead O’Connor began her career in the mid-’80s, and garnered critical and college radio success with her 1987 album, The Lion and the Cobra, and the single “Mandinka.” While putting together her follow-up album in Dublin, O’Connor’s manager, Fachtna O’Kelly, suggested she should cover Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2 U” on the record, which would be titled I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got and released in March 1990.

Sinead leant the ballad a softness and vulnerability that was instantly arresting. It’s no wonder that the track was issued as the album’s lead single and released to radio weeks before the album came out. By late April, it was topping the singles charts, not only in Ireland, but also in the U.K., Australia, Germany and the U.S., where it remained at the #1 spot for four weeks. The single’s success also propelled I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got to the top album spot, and the release eventually went double-platinum in the U.K. and U.S.

Although the song was a blockbuster hit, it was the video for “Nothing Compares 2 U” that truly made Sinead O’Connor an international sensation. Directed by John Maybury, the clip mostly centers on O’Connor’s face as she sings the song before a black background. The key moment of course, is when the singer tears up toward the ballad’s end in a moment of honest emotion. O’Connor later said she started crying because of the lyric “All the flowers that you planted, Mama/ in the backyard / all died when you went away,” due to a difficult relationship with her mother. She told Rolling Stone, “I didn’t intend for that moment to happen, but when it did, I thought, ‘I should let this happen.’”

Because of the emotion she showed , as well as her unique look (a short-cropped, boy-ish hairstyle), O’Connor and the video became instant pop icons. The video was in rapid rotation on MTV and even took home Best Video honors at the 1990 Video Music Awards (the first video by a female artist to do so).

“Nothing Compares 2 U” became such a big hit for Sinead O’Connor that, soon after its chart run, Prince started playing his own version in concert . He even included a live duet with Rosie Gaines on his 1993 best-of compilation, The Hits. To this day, it remains Prince’s top-charting single – tied with 1984’s “Let’s Go Crazy,” which also spent a month at #1.

The Gibson Interview: Nikki Sixx

Thirty years after Nikki Sixx began his career recording albums and becoming a fixture on Los Angeles’ Sunset Strip with Motley Crue, his head is still exploding with musical ideas. Sixx’s latest showing, This is Gonna Hurt (out May 3), shows his arena rock style growing more diverse, swelled with strings, epic melodies and his always-fluid, meat-and-potatoes rock bass lines.

Of course, the past few years have proved Sixx is more than a one-talent gent. He’s a Renaissance man who hosts a nationally syndicated rock radio show (Sixx Sense), writes New York Times best-selling books (2007’s The Heroin Diaries: A Year in the Life of a Shattered Rock Star and the just-released This Is Gonna Hurt), fronts his own hard rock band (Sixx:A.M.), and devotes countless chunks of time to photography.

In this exclusive interview with Gibson.com, Sixx talks about what makes his new book so personal, spills details on the forthcoming album and explains why he “can’t really stand on a stage” without a Thunderbird in his hand.

I read that you put together your new book, This is Gonna Hurt, with the goal to inspire people to do something they’ve never done before. Is that right?

Absolutely. I think as an artist, we all hope, on one level or another, to inspire people with our work. I was inspired by people growing up, whether it was Aerosmith or The Rolling Stones or photographers, and fashion has always been a big inspiration for me as well. In a sense, this is giving back.

This book is filled with photos you took and passages that bleed out your thoughts and experiences. Would you say this is extremely personal?

It’s very personal, but yet I think the social commentary in it doesn’t necessarily speak from my voice. It’s speaking from what I’ve found to be true in the world, which is wonderful. I think a lot of people relate to it.

Where do you get inspiration for your photography?

I’ve always loved different things in life. Whether it was different bands or even architecture, I’ve always had an eye for stuff some would deem odd and some would say is extremely beautiful. For me, that’s where I’ve always been, and the photography that has inspired me is wide – everything from wet plate style photography in the 1800s to early 1900s to beyond. With my photography, I was able to look at what I loved as an artist and start to experiment.

Your forthcoming CD, This is Gonna Hurt, is a companion to the book. How are the emotions of the book and album intertwined?

Well, the book was originally going be a coffee table book with just the art. Having a huge body of work, I was able to look at it and try to find some consistency in it, to bring it together in one collection. I started writing a passage that would accompany the photography book, and it ended up being almost 500 pages. It really turned into a breakdown on social commentary on beauty and those messages that have been downloaded into my head and my life, and I was able to find that thread. In that moment of inspiration, the guys in Sixx:A.M. could see it, too. We had that moment where we sat together as a band and talked and they were like, “Dude, I relate to this,” or “I felt like that, as well.” So we started writing music, and that started to push me more as a photographer. It really became like one in itself.

Tell me about the making of the album documentary, which is on Hulu.com.

Well, I had a documentary crew with me filming me doing my photo sessions, and that was a personal thing for me. I didn’t know what I wanted to do with that, and as the band started talking, we started realizing it was a bigger piece. I interviewed the band members, the subjects I photographed, and myself for the documentary. I was able to capture someone like Amy Purdy, who is a double amputee due to Neisseria Meningitis and has gone on to do great things with her life. What was missing was that moment where they get a voice, and that’s where the documentaries come into play.

What are you most proud you were able to accomplish on the album?

I’m proud of the fact we were able to be vulnerable and honest as songwriters and true to what we said we were going to do – to raise the standard of songwriting within the band and really push ourselves musically. That’s a good feeling. That honest punk rock attitude: just doing it because you love it.

You’re a big Gibson player. What make Gibson basses special?

The attention to wood is important. With the Thunderbird, for me, I feel like I can’t stand on a stage and not have a Thunderbird in my hand. It’s like my skin. It completely fits me like a glove. The way it fits in my hand and lays in my hand, the way it leans against my body, everything about it. It’s been amazing to have a relationship with Gibson and have Gibson work with me on certain types of pickups and wiring. These are just very little things that may not mean a lot to someone else, but are very personal to me.

What was important to you when helping to design your signature Blackbird and Thunderbird IV?

One of the things important to me was to be a bit subtle with the signature series. I didn’t want to call it the Nikki Sixx bass. I wanted other bass players to want to play it. That’s why we came up with the name, Blackbird. Gibson Thunderbirds are what I’ve always played, but my signature is the Blackbird. I’ve seen a lot of guys in a lot of bands play the Blackbird, because it doesn’t scream my name all over it. I think musicians want to be individual. They love a certain instrument and want to play it, but they don’t want it to be too gaudy or too much about the other guy. They want to make it their own.

Any plans for the return of Crue Fest this year?

Well, we’re doing a headline tour with Poison and New York Dolls that will take us through August. At that point, we’re heading towards the end of summer, and I don’t know at that point what we’re going to do or whether we’re going to tour anymore or not. So right now, no plans for Crue Fest.

On top of writing, performing, and photography, you also host a nationally syndicated rock radio show, Sixx Sense. How do you do it all?

Radio is an opportunity to say something into a microphone, and whether you play a song or say something provocative or funny, it makes people have an emotional reaction. They feel something. They feel good. They feel bad. They feel angry. They feel disappointed. You have an opportunity to change something, and for me, that’s where radio has always been a bit like magic.

When I turn on the radio, it creates a mood, and I really enjoy that. Kerri Kasem, my co-host, and I do seven shows in four days, and it’s very organized. It’s a lot of work, and it’s the most fun I’ve had outside of playing rock and roll. We laugh every day. No matter what you’re going through, you have to deliver. If you’re going through a high, you have to control that, and if you’re going through a low, you have to control that, because that part of your life is personal and you always have a responsibility to entertain them.

Arctic Monkeys Member Loses £40,000 When Ancient Rum Accidentally Opened

Arctic Monkeys drummer Matt Helders lost an estimated 40,000 pounds when staff at the Sheffield, England, watering hole that he owns – Bowery Bar – accidentally opened a 215-year-old bottle of Henry Jefferson of Whitehaven. Helders’ staff had purchased the bottle of rum for 70 pounds but didn’t realize its value until they’d already popped the bottle, and spilt some of its contents onto the bar.

Helders and Arctic Monkeys bandmate Alex Turner were among those who sampled a few shots.

A source told The Sun this week, “The bar staff were mortified when they found out what they had done. Later on that night everyone was talking about it including Matt, Alex, and former Arctics member Andy Nicholson. Everyone was shocked but found it pretty funny – except the manager who runs the pub for Matt.”

The Bowery Bar posted a message on their Facebook page acknowledging, “The industry experts seem to agree that we’ve opened a bottle of booze potentially worth about 40 grand. [Expletive]. It was a stupid mistake but it made a lovely dark ’n’ stormy cocktail. Now we’ve got some of the country’s leading rum experts investigating and coming to see us.”

Brotherly Love: Kings of Leon Members Have Tried to Stab Each Other

Stephen Mitchell considers himself Kings of Leon’s #1 fan. As such, he’s been filming the band for a decade, steadily putting together footage for the upcoming documentary Talihina Sky – about to make its debut at the Tribeca Film Festival. The director recently spoke to Spinner.com about the members’ sometimes violent relationship (three of them are brothers, after all).

“[Nathan and Caleb Followill] have notoriously gone at each other over the years,” he said. “They’ve had knockout – I mean broken shoulders, pulled hair, trying to stab each other. Those two are like twins almost. They’re so close but they’re too close, if that makes sense.”

The movie follows the Kings from their first show in a garage to playing to enormous crowds at giant festivals, following the release of their 2008 breakthrough Only by the Night. Since Mitchell has been to so many of the band’s shows, which one does he think was the best?

“The best show ever was 2008 at Oxygen, just outside of Dublin – Irish people just get [expletive] nuts,” he said. “They’re bonkers! They get so drunk. They sing every word, every background vocal part. They sing the guitar solo parts and they’re going [expletive] nuts!

“The dudes get so fired up with joy, they’re not even mad and they’re punching each other in the face. It’s awesome.”

K.K. Downing Retires from Judas Priest

British metal band Judas Priest announced this week that founding guitarist K.K. Downing, 59, retired from the band and will not join them on their forthcoming farewell tour, named the Epitaph Tour.

Remaining members – singer Rob Halford, guitarist Glenn Tipton, bassist Ian Hill and drummer Scott Travis – issued a press release to announced Downing’s replacement as Richie Faulkner, the 31-year-old guitarist behind Lauren Harris and Dirty Deeds.

In a recent interview Downing was asked for his thoughts on the farewell tour, and he said, “To be perfectly honest, I have not given any thought as to possible case scenarios after the final tour. At the moment though I feel that Priest has played its part in music history and feel very proud to have achieved what we have. So there is a good positive feeling inside me and, of course, I feel very indebted to the fans all over the world. As for the future, we probably need the help of [Priest’s most recent album] Nostradamus.”

Jeff Beck Salutes Les Paul and Hires Teen Prodigy

Jeff Beck is possibly in the form of his life: 2010’s studio album Emotion and Commotion won two Grammys, then earlier this year, he released his retro-styled tribute to guitar pioneer Les Paul. And now, he’s got a teenage guitar prodigy as a support act.

Beck recently toured Rock ‘N’ Roll Party Honoring Les Paul to promote the latter project, but is now back with his regular band to continue spotlighting his music from Emotion and Commotion.

In tribute to Les Paul, Beck told Mlive.com: “Hearing Les’ music as a young boy at home over the radio, I knew that is what I wanted to do. I would definitely say that he inspired me to pick up a guitar and learn to play. Les was an innovator and so ahead of his time. The tricks he developed were genius.”

Beck is not just about the past, though. For some of his forthcoming U.S. dates, Beck has Tyler Bryant as support and on-stage sparring partner. Bryant is just 19.

Bryant recently told the press: “I was rehearsing with my band when my manager pulled me outside to tell me some exciting news. When I found out that I was going to be touring with Jeff Beck, I ran up and down the halls screaming at the top of my lungs. I guess you can say I was excited. His show is incredible.”

Steve Miller, Jason Lee Confirmed for Blues Music Awards

The 32nd Annual Blues Music Awards will start with bang—or at least, a bingo—this year, as it has just been announced that the Steve Miller Band will open the festivities on May 5. Miller’s latest album, Bingo!, garnered the Space Cowboy his first-ever BMA nomination this year. Miller is no stranger to the blues, having cut his teeth as a sideman on Chicago’s famous blues scene, playing alongside the likes of Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy Waters.

Also appearing at the awards, as a presenter, will be actor Jason Lee, star of the TNT show, Memphis Beat. Lee himself closes many episodes of the show performing blues songs and Elvis covers live on stage. BMA winner Keb’ Mo’ arranges and performs much of the program’s music. The show also features Steve Cropper playing guitar on the theme song.

The 32nd Annual Blues Music Awards will take place at the Cook Convention Center in Memphis, Tennessee. The presenting sponsor of the awards is The Gibson Foundation. For more information, visit the official Blues Foundation website.

Music Inside - Collaboration Dedicated to Waylon 1

Music Inside - Collaboration Dedicated to Waylon 1Waylon Jennings is one of a handful of undeniably towering figures in country music history. A true stylist, he brought the charisma of rock and the purity of blues to bear on his distinctive take on country music. In the process, he earned a place on the Mt. Rushmore of modern country legends and left the generations that followed a standard worth striving for.

An album in tribute to such an artist is a high-wire act, an attempt to re-capture lightning in a bottle. Rarely do such projects do justice to the artists they seek to honor.

Judging from the reaction of those at the heart of The Music Inside, Volume I, the first of a three-CD set, this all-star tribute to Waylon is one of the few. Produced by Witt Stewart and featuring Kris Kristofferson, Jamey Johnson, Trace Adkins and the reunited Alabama, among many others, The Music Inside had the full and enthusiastic involvement of Waylon's widow Jessi Colter and his son Shooter Jennings.

Jessi and Shooter were involved every step of the way, approving the project's tracks and contributing a song each on Volume 1, with another from Shooter and two more from Jessi slated for the upcoming volumes.

The Music Inside also features Randy Houser, John Hiatt, Patty Griffin, James Otto, Sunny Sweeney and newcomer Chanel Campbell. The breadth and depth of the talent assembled for the project insured the kind of scope and nuance that marked Waylon's work.

The public's first listen to the project is its first single, Alabama's take on the classic, "Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way," a cut that reminds us how much early Alabama drew on the Waylon sound. It also displays the power of Waylon's legacy in its ability to draw the band out of retirement.

"We recorded this album live in the studio," says Stewart. "We did very little overdubbing. Almost all the vocals were literally what we recorded when we were cutting the tracks. We'd bring in some harmonies, overdub a dobro or lap steel, but even most of that was live. It was always more about feeling and passion than about laying down a rhythm track and overdubbing instruments. When you get great musicians and a great song together and let an artist interpret it, then you're just trying to catch a moment. We were fortunate enough to catch a lot of them."

The unity of Waylon's music and vision changed all of modern music for the better and his legacy resonates as strongly as ever among those who make music. From the beginning, Stewart was aiming to reacquaint the listening public with the impact his genius still has among musicians.

"My goal," he says, "was to make a record that would shine a light on Waylon to younger people. I wanted to find people who love and respect his music and we found a lot of them. But above all, I wanted to make something he would like and be proud of and according to the people who knew and loved him best, we accomplished that."

Linkin Park Single Included in New <em>Transformers</em> Movie

Linkin Park’s “Iridescent” will be featured in the upcoming summer movie, Transformers: Dark of the Moon. The single features a new version of the track that appears on the band’s most recent album, A Thousand Suns, and will play over the film’s ending credits, according to Blabbermouth.net.

A Linkin Park song has been featured in each one of the Transformers movies – “What I’ve Done” was included on the first one and “New Divide” appeared in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. Both songs hit #1 on the Billboard Modern Rock Radio chart.

“The first two songs were huge hits and I have no doubt that this new song will be equally as successful," director Michael Bay said. Composer Steve Jablonsky weighed in on why the band and the film series are a good match: “Michael and I respond to Linkin Park because they have a cinematic sensibility to their music that translates to the big screen.”

The band’s own Joe Hahn will direct the video for “Iridescent,” just like he did with “New Divide,” which included Transformers film clips.

“‘Iridescent’ has always been a fan favorite when we play the songs from A Thousand Suns live on stage, so we’re thrilled that Michael decided to feature it in his third Transformers movie,” said Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon hits theaters on July 1.

Radio Ga Ga: Queen’s Brian May and Lady Gaga Team Up

Legendary Queen guitarist Brian May plays guitar on a track on Lady Gaga’s new album, Born This Way, according to The Daily Mirror. The two musicians paired up for the song “You & I.”

“It’s always been Gaga’s dream to perform as Queen. If it wasn’t for Queen, there would be no Gaga,” a source told The Daily Mirror. “This collaboration with Brian May means the world to her.”

Of course, Lady Gaga famously took her name from a Queen song, “Radio Ga Ga,” thanks to producer Rob Fusari. In the past, Gaga (whose real name is Stefani Germanotta) has credited Queen frontman Freddie Mercury as one of her big influences.

“Freddie was unique – one of the biggest personalities in the whole of pop music,” she said. “He was not only a singer but a fantastic performer, a man of the theater, who constantly transformed himself.”

Born This Way will be released on May 23.

Duff McKagan Happy to ‘Reconnect’ with Axl Rose

Last October, Duff McKagan made headlines by joining former bandmate Axl Rose and the latest version of Guns N’ Roses onstage in London. The reunion, which only lasted four songs, set off a firestorm of speculation that the event might set in motion a reunion of the original GN’R lineup—speculation McKagan quickly dismissed. Still, the Loaded bassist says it felt good to get back together with an old friend.

“The cool thing about that,” McKagan told Music-News.com, “was Axl and I got to reconnect. We're grown-ups, you know. There's been a lot silliness. Lawyers and (expletive). You know, lawyers like to create a situation so that their jobs go on. And I know that. But it was just nice to reconnect. We had a nice dinner. That was much more important to me than actually getting up and playing.”

McKagan was impressed, though, with his old group’s current lineup.

“It was fun playing with those guys,” he said. “There are some really good players in that band.”

Brian Setzer Goes Instru-MENTAL on New Album

Grammy-winning rockabilly guitarist Brian Setzer has delved into the worlds of bluegrass and jazz with his first all-instrumental album, Instru-MENTAL, which hit stores on Tuesday.

Among the album’s many gems, the former Stray Cats frontman jazzifies bluegrass legend Bill Monroe’s “Blue Moon of Kentucky,” trades his six-string for a banjo on Earl Scruggs “Earl’s Breakdown,” and puts his own unique stamp on such 20th Century classics as Gene Austin’s “Lonesome Road” and the Tex Davis/Gene Vincent classic “Be-Bop-A-Lula.” Setzer also includes six originals, including “Go-Go Godzilla,” which is featured in the new movie Soul Surfer, co-starring country music siren Carrie Underwood.

“I didn’t start writing an instrumental record, per se,” Setzer told GuitarWorld.com. “I wrote seven songs with lyrics, and then, all of a sudden, I just took a turn and started fooling around with ‘Blue Moon of Kentucky,’ except without any vocals. I started playing melody chords and thought, ‘Wow, this is pretty cool!’ So the direction turned about halfway through my writing. I had never done an instrumental record, but I thought, well, now’s the time.”

Instru-MENTAL tracklist (all songs written by Setzer unless otherwise noted):

1. “Blue Moon of Kentucky” (Bill Monroe)
2. “Cherokee” (Ray Noble)
3. “Be-Bop-A-Lula” (Tex Davis/Gene Vincent)
4. “Earl's Breakdown” (Earl Scruggs)
5. “Far Noir East”
6. “Intermission”
7. “Go-Go Godzilla”
8. “Lonesome Road” (Gene Austin/Nathaniel Shilkret)
9. “Hillbilly Jazz Meltdown”
10. “Hot Love”
11. “Pickpocket”

Music From Big Pink

Music From Big PinkMusic from Big Pink stands as one of those rare albums that turned the rock world on its axis. On this record, released in 1968 at the height of the psychedelic revolution, the five members of the Band (along with producer-sideman John Simon) eschewed spacey diversions, opting for an earthier route. Soon enough, wah-wah pedals and tape loops were making way for fiddles and mandolins. The group's most democratic effort (Robbie Robertson would soon emerge as the ensemble's mouthpiece), the debut's 11 songs come from Robertson, bassist Rick Danko, and pianist Richard Manuel, who contributes two songs and cowrote the doleful opener, "Tears of Rage," with Bob Dylan. Manuel's role would diminish from this point hence and the balance he brought to the quintet would be missed. Many would argue that Big Pink's sequel, The Band, represents their crowning achievement. The truth is, Big Pink is the purest distillation of the Band, and their preeminent recording. This remastered reissue is generously expanded to include nine bonus tracks, a bunch highlighted by a Robertson rarity ("Ferdinand the Imposter") and a cover of the Stanley Brothers's "If I Lose." --Steven Stolder

The Wild & Wonderful World of Gibson: The Moderne

In 1957, Gibson desperately needed to push the envelope. Not only were fellow guitar manufacturers beginning to issue less traditional designs but other industries inspired change as well. Elvis Presley’s “Jailhouse Rock” rattled the airwaves, Sputnik circled the earth, and Chevy’s tailfins grew suddenly sharp. Gibson, too, had invested in a fresh perspective — hiring Ted McCarty as their new company president in 1950. McCarty spent his first years with the company effectively shaking things up — supervising the design of the original Les Paul model and the introduction of solidbody guitars into the Gibson product line. He also inadvertently created what is now known industry-wide as the Holy Grail of Vintage Guitars — the Gibson Moderne — because many authorities disagree about whether or not a prototype ever existed.

Famous for his forward-thinking, top-quality inventions — including the stop tailpiece and the Tune-O-Matic bridge — McCarty labored in 1957 to introduce a trio of new Korina wood models that included the Flying V, Explorer, and Moderne. With the help of a local Kalamazoo, MI, artist, the modernistic models were designed specifically to revolutionize Gibson’s image.

“There must have been a hundred sketches around the shop, all sorts of weird shapes,” said McCarty in a 1978 Guitar Player interview. “The dealers thought we were too stodgy, too traditional, so we decided to just knock them off their feet. We were working on this one guitar — since it was a solidbody, you could do just about anything with the shape — and it was sort of triangular. It was too heavy and we had to remove some weight from somewhere and we discovered that we didn’t need the back end at all, so we just cut out some material in the middle. We wanted it to look like an arrow. Someone in the shop made a wisecrack and said, ‘The thing looks like a flying V,’ and we thought about the name and eventually used it. That’s how we came up with the Moderne and Explorer, too, just experimenting with shapes. We must have made dozens of variations.”

On January 7, 1958, McCarty was issued patents for the Flying V, Explorer, and Moderne, but many believe that only two of these guitars ever actually rolled off the Gibson production line.

“‘Rare’ is not the word for the Moderne, which was to be the third model in a modernistic trio that included the Flying V and Explorer,” said guitar historian Walter Carter in an interview with Gibson.com last year. “‘Non-existent’ is the correct word, since no genuine Moderne has ever surfaced. Gibson employee Jim Duerloo, who was there in 1958, says they never even made a prototype.”

Others disagree with the idea that a Moderne was never constructed. In American Guitars: An Illustrated History, author Tom Wheeler says he interviewed just about every employee who worked for Gibson during that period but that everyone remembers things differently.

“Two sources were certain that the number [of Modernes] constructed was between 40 and 50, and none suggested a higher figure,” writes Wheeler. “We do know that some were destroyed in the Gibson ‘morgue’ subsequent to the industry’s unanimously negative reaction to the guitar and the company’s decision not to add it to the line. The 22 survivors listed in the shipping totals appeared on routine invoices and do not include Modernes sold at cut rate to Gibson employees or those which were kept at the plant for experimental purposes.”

According to Wheeler, McCarty told him that only a half dozen or so Modernes were made. A possible owner of one of those original Modernes? ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons. In 2009, he told Gibson.com that he believes he owns an original Moderne prototype, but its authenticity can’t be proven.

Gibbons recounts, “A couple of years ago I received a call from a friend who heard that a painter from San Antonio wanted to sell a funny-looking old guitar. No big surprise he thought about me immediately. We drove there, checked out the guitar, and bought it. It looked like an old Gibson Moderne, definitely not one of the reissues that Gibson sold in 1982. We showed it to some experts, but none of them could help. Even guitar guru George Gruhn got on the case. He disassembled the guitar and examined every screw, every cable, everything, but not even he could identify this instrument, because there was no information about the Moderne apart from the blueprints. But what he could tell for sure was that all parts of this guitar were from the ’50s. We’ll probably never know. What’s interesting is how this painter, who has nothing to do with guitars, got hold of it: He found it at a junk clearance somewhere.”

Gibson did “reissue” the Moderne in 1982, and that model has become enormously popular with collectors.

Undertow: The Sonic Secrets of Tool’s Adam Jones

Sure, his band has headlined Bonnaroo and sold millions of albums, but Tool’s Adam Jones does not get his due as a modernist riff-master. Maybe it’s because the L.A.-based outfit play a prog-metal blend that’s not exactly at the apex of popularity, compounded by often-lengthy compositions that dip into such dark waters as slow death, torture and prison. But the band nonetheless hit a nerve in their legions of fans and Jones generates a sonic kaleidoscope on stage.

Armed with a Silverburst Gibson Les Paul and multiple amplifier stacks, Jones plays a constant barrage of edgy riffage in concert. And on record, it’s clear that he’s the contemporary equivalent of 1970s Jimmy Page when it comes to creating great licks that propel songs—a musician with an endless supply of memorable six-string hooks.

The 46-year-old guitarist began his musical life as a violinist and first stepped into rock as a bass player in a band with future Rage Against the Machine stringman Tom Morello called Electric Sheep, inspired by the same Philip K. Dick novella that begat Blade Runner. Jones attended film school and developed his own approach to stop-motion animation—the technique that was used by Willis O’Brien to make the original version of King Kong. Jones used the approach to create Tool’s striking videos for the songs “Stinkfist,” “Prison Sex,” “Parabola” and “Sober,” among others.

When Jones founded Tool in 1990 with singer Maynard James Keenan, he was already developing a guitar approach that bridged the conventional and unconventional. Besides his knack for developing sharply honed riffs and his blasting deployment of angular power chords, Jones loves to pe into pure noise—using controlled feedback, string scratching, behind the nut bends, chiming arpeggiated chords and other moves to heighten Tool’s already pitched level of drama. He also enjoys variations on open tunings, like B-A-D-G-B-E for “Prison Sex.”

At the core of Jones’ sound is the Gibson Les Paul Silverburst Custom, a model originally made from 1979 to 1985. Jones, always an adventurer, claims to enjoy the idea that his instrument’s tone is always gradually altering itself. Reportedly he owns three original Silverburst Customs, tricked out with Seymour Duncan humbuckers. He also used a natural finish Gibson Les Paul to cut “Prison Sex” and “Parabola.” He also told Guitar World magazine that he’s used a Gibson SG for some studio chores.

Live and in the studio, Jones uses a blend of amps. Two favorites are a 1976 Marshall Super Bass and a Diezel VH-4 “blueface.” On the latter, he never switches out of the ultra-high-output third channel. During the recording of 2001’s Lateralus, he reportedly experimented with a vintage Sunn lead head, too, and for 2006’s 10,000 Days he blended his Super Bass and Diezel with a Bogner Uberschall and a Riveria Knucklehead. Jones drives all his amps hard to achieve his responsive tone. He also uses Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifiers and Marshall and Mesa cabs.

Jones is also a glutten for effects. On the intro to “Reflection” and “The Grudge,” both from Lateralus, he employs a vintage Moog Taurus bass pedal system. But aside from the Heil Talk Box on 10,000 Days, run through a Roland JC-120 and juiced up by a dynamic compressor, Jones’ choices of effects is less esoteric. His wah-wah pedal is a dependable Cry Baby, and his stable of other sound generators includes Boss DD3 and DD5 digital delays, a BF-2 flanger, a Line 6 Delay modeler (which also samples on the fly), a Strobostomp tuner, a tremolo pedal, chorus, and an array of distortion boxes. During experimental phases, Jones has taken the stage with multiple pedal boards at his feet. The irony of this rundown is that Jones has gone on record saying he doesn’t like to use pedals.

He’s also gone on record, in the May 2009 issue of Guitar World, with a list of his 10 favorite guitarists. Not surprisingly, they are all forward-thinking players, like Jones himself. The list: Robert Fripp, Adrian Belew and Trey Gunn of King Crimson; Buzz Osborne of the Melvins, Paul Leary of the Butthole Surfers, Andy Gill of the Gang of Four, the Bad Brains’ Dr. Know and Fredrik Thordendal and Marten Hagstrom of Meshuggah.

The Cars’ Elliot Easton Talks New Album

One of the most pleasant surprises in the world of music this past year has been the reunion of ’80s pop rockers The Cars. It was a reunion few could have foreseen, given the divisiveness caused by keyboardist Greg Hawkes and guitarist Elliot Easton founding The New Cars six years ago, notably replacing Ric Ocasek with Todd Rundgren. But all sins have been forgiven and the four surviving members of the band (bassist and co-vocalist Benjamin Orr died of pancreatic cancer in 2000) have a new album, Move Like This, due in stores next month. Easton talked to MusicRadar.com about how the whole thing came about.

“My recollection of things is that I felt that a good amount of time had passed, and I hadn't spoken to Ric in a while,” the lefty guitarist recalled. “So one day I just picked up the phone to call an old friend, you know? Ric and I chatted, and it was nice. I asked him what he was doing, and he said he was writing songs. He said they were kind of different from other things he had written before, but he was very excited. I asked him what he was going to do with the songs, and he said, 'I'll probably make another solo record.' So I said, ‘Why don't we make a Cars record?’”

Easton says the off-the-cuff joke turned into the real deal shortly thereafter.

“I guess he thought about it for a few weeks and called around to David [Robinson] and Greg, and everybody was up for the idea. Suddenly, it was like, 'Yeah, let's do that!'"

Lady Antebellum Singer Talks Third Album

Following the success of the blockbuster 2010 album, Need You Now, is no small task for Nashville hit-makers Lady Antebellum. Powered by the single “I Run to You” and the hit title track, Need You Now topped charts all over the world and garnered a boatload of awards. Nevertheless, the trio of Charles Kelley, Dave Haywood and Hillary Scott are hard at work on a follow-up.

Kelley told Undercover.fm, “We’re a little over halfway done right now and we’re excited to get some new music out there. Again, we’re just trying to keep our heads down and not over-think this thing. With the success of Need You Now, everyone keeps asking us, ‘How are you going to follow that up?’ – and I don’t know how to answer that. You just go in there and do what you do and hopefully it’ll be received well.”

According to Kelley, the important thing is to make music the band can take pride in.

“It’ll be hard to match the same success as that,” he said. “I think we just try and keep that in perspective and just keep making music that we’re proud of and it’ll take whatever course it’s going to take.”

The Gibson Interview: Duff McKagan

Duff McKagan’s Loaded is in itself a loaded name for a band. It refers to McKagan’s battle against substance abuse, and it also seems to slyly hint at the same Guns N’ Roses reference found in the name Velvet Revolver. The band’s latest album, The Taking, is heavier and louder than its predecessor, Sick, and it also has a more cohesive band feel, buoyed by some decent touring time since the last album.

While the band’s first recording, the EP Wasted Heart, was released in 2001 and the second in 2009, it took a mere two years for The Taking to enter the world. “Velvet Revolver got in between Dark Days – the first Loaded record – and Sick,” McKagan recounts on why Velvet Revolver took precedence. “It was kind of important because Slash and I had this really long, obvious history, and the thing that got Velvet Revolver together was a friend of ours dying.”

That friend was drummer Randy Castillo, a driving force in Ozzy Osbourne’s second-most-classic lineup during the No More Tears era. Castillo also replaced Tommy Lee in Motley Crue. After Castillo tragically died of cancer in 2002, Duff, Slash and GN’R drummer Matt Sorum performed at a benefit concert with Josh Todd and Keith Nelson of Buckcherry (plus B-Real and Sen Dog of Cypress Hill). Velvet Revolver grew from there.

“It was one of those things where fate stepped in, Velvet Revolver started playing, and the guys in Loaded got it, and Velvet Revolver made two records,” McKagan says. “Loaded played a few gigs here, but more like charity gigs around Christmas and stuff, up here in Seattle. We knew we were going to do another record but we didn’t think it was going to take that long. As soon as I was off the road with Velvet Revolver after Libertad, Loaded got right back.”

The band wrote Sick, took it on tour and kept writing and recording ideas on the road. The demos caught the ear of legendary producer Terry Date (Soundgarden, Pantera), and the rest is history.

Taken as a whole, The Taking goes a little deeper than either Dark Days or Sick. “The record is almost a backwards concept record,” McKagan explains. “It’s really the story of a break-up of two very dear friends that we witnessed as a band. We were such good friends with both of them, the guy and the girl, and we watched the fracture and the deceit, the lying to yourself, the lying to the other one, the heartache, the heartbreak, the anger – that’s why there’s ‘Your Name,’ ‘Follow Me to Hell’ and ‘Lords of Abaddon’ – then that kind of wishful thinking… Like ‘Man, it was always better somewhere else,’ and that's where ‘Indian Summer’ goes. That first love.”

“Indian Summer” is a brighter, lighter-sounding track than the bulk of the album, with almost Smashing Pumpkins-like melodies soaring over a part-punk/part-grunge/part-Cheap Trick groove. Although the narrative of The Taking as a whole is non-linear, the track’s placement in the running order – seventh of 12 songs – pushes the whole set forward and pays off the optimistic thread established on track four, “We Win.”

“What happened is these two got divorced but they became better friends than ever, and that’s where ‘We Win’ came from,” McKagan says. “The thing about this backwards concept record is that we didn’t really realize we were all writing about the same thing, because it affected us all. We couldn’t really take part in the break-up – usually you take part in somebody’s break-up because you’re friends with the guy or the girl, and they talk to you, and just by them talking to you about it, you’re taking part in it. We kinda refused talking to either one of them about it because we didn’t want to take sides, so it was like Zen Buddhism: we didn’t talk to each other about it. The first song was ‘Easier Lying’ and ‘Indian Summer’ had its place in that story.”

Although he plays bass in the currently dormant Velvet Revolver and was, of course, the bass player for GN’R, Duff is Loaded’s rhythm guitarist and lead vocalist. His gear stable on The Taking included a newer Gibson SG. “I have some great Gibsons,” he says. “I didn’t use any but the SG on The Taking, but I have ’59 tobacco ’burst that I just keep in storage – a safe, basically. Y’know, you can’t take that thing out and play it because it’s worth so much damn money these days. I have an old ’58 Junior or Special, too, which is a beautiful guitar. I don’t really play that one too much, because again it’s worth a bunch of dough. And I also have a ’73 Les Paul Custom that I play a lot.”

McKagan is maintaining a “wait and see” approach to Velvet Revolver’s search for a new singer to replace Scott Weiland. In the meantime he has plans to take Loaded on the road for much of the year, and then there’s the pressing matter of his forthcoming book, an autobiography, which is due in October.

Blink-182 Postpone Tour to Work on New Album

Reunited punk-pop band Blink-182 have scrapped their entire U.K. and Ireland tour, according to an announcement on their website. Mark Hoppus, Tom DeLonge and Travis Barker have chosen to continue recording their new album instead, according to NME.com.

“It is with heavy hearts that we have to announce our planned 2011 European summer tour has been rescheduled,” the band said in a statement. “When we booked the tour last year, we were confident that we would have the new album out before the summer. Turns out we were mistaken as the album is taking longer than we thought and won’t be out till later this year.”

The trio have chosen to postpone the tour until next summer, when they’ll be able to play their new tunes.

“We hoped we would have some new songs to play rather than do another ‘greatest hits tour’ which you all saw last summer. The three of us are working very hard to do what we set out to do when we re-formed, get a new Blink-182 album recorded.”

The band were set to play the T in the Park and Oxegen festivals this summer. There’s no word yet on if the Blink boys will be back for those events in 2012.

Foo Fighters Guitarist Admits Resentment

Though their new album has just hit #1 on both sides of the Atlantic, the Foo Fighters aren’t completely in their comfort zone. Just a few weeks before Dave Grohl and company released the hit Wasting Light album, they unveiled Back and Forth, a documentary by Oscar-winning filmmaker James Moll that revealed several uncomfortable and painful pieces of the group’s past. Now, the band find themselves answering as many questions about former drummers as they do their latest single.

One of the metaphorical nerves that was exposed was guitarist Chris Shiflett’s resentment when original Foo guitarist Pat Smear rejoined the band in 2006.

"I was wary of Pat,” Shiflett told the New Zealand Herald. “I think anybody would have been. He almost came back after I'd been in the band a month. And I would have been out at that point; it wasn't like now. I didn't have my footing. So that was my frame of mind: here's this guy who wants my job and my job is how I feed my children and pay my rent. So my job's important to me for lots of reasons, musically and otherwise."

Foo Fighters hit the road next month on a world tour, with their first stop at the U.K.’s One Big Weekend festival on May 14.

<em>Harry Potter</em> Producer Lands Beatles for Next Movie

David Heyman, the producer who brought the J.K. Rowling’s popular Harry Potter books to the silver screen, is looking to recapture that magic with the help of none other than The Beatles, according to Collider.com. Heyman’s next film is an animation project that will feature ten songs by the Fab Four. The film itself will center around a dung beetle trying to woo a ladybug. According to Heyman, landing The Beatles for his soundtrack was “not easy, but we’re really excited about it.”

The film wouldn’t be the group’s first appearance in an animated film. John, Paul, George and Ringo all starred as characters in the 1968 surprise hit, Yellow Submarine. The film was directed by Canadian filmmaker George Dunning, who had previously created the animated opening for the Pink Panther classic, A Shot in the Dark.

As for which Beatles classics will appear in the film, Heyman said, “It’s a bit early to say what the songs are, but I’m really, really excited.”

Slash: No Velvet Revolver Plans for 2 Years

Slash has said that he does not see Velvet Revolver working together for at least another couple of years.

The hard rock band have yet to replace singer Scott Weiland, who departed in 2008. Recent rumors that Slipknot’s Corey Taylor might get the gig have been quashed.

Slash told Vorterix.com: “We did work with Corey Taylor, and as soon as that rumor [got around], next thing you know, everybody is saying Corey’s the new singer... All we were doing was just rehearsing with him and trying him out – auditioning him... It just didn’t seem to fit right to me. And he’s great – and I love Corey – but it didn’t seem like the answer to the Velvet Revolver problem.”

As for the future, he said: “Duff’s got his own thing, I’ve got my thing, Matt’s got his thing... Next year I definitely will make another Slash record with Myles Kennedy and go on tour. So at least for the next couple of years, nothing is going to be happening with Velvet Revolver that I can see ’cause I’ll be focused on this. And after that’s over, if something happens... I’m just not really concerning myself with it right now. We had all these different guys try out, all really good singers, but nobody has fit the thing, so, you know, I have to move on.”
